Penn State backup quarterback Beau Pribula has entered the transfer portal and will not be available for the upcoming College Football Playoff.
Pribula confirmed his intentions in a Twitter post on Sunday and said the overlapping portal timeline and CFP playoff made for "an impossible decision."
The situation leaves Penn State in the unenviable position of entering Saturday's first-round CFP game with SMU (noon, TNT) at Beaver Stadium without a backup quarterback who has taken a snap in game action.
Freshman Ethan Grunkemeyer will likely ascend to the No. 2 spot behind starter Drew Allar.
This development also seems to indicate that Allar will return for the 2025 season, which had been a topic of speculation.
Pribula said he spoke "at length" with his family and coaches before deciding "with a heavy heart" to explore other opportunities.
He thanked his teammates, coaches and the Penn State fan base.
The portal opened Dec. 9 and closes Dec. 28 before opening again in April.
Pribula completed 26-of-35 passes this season for 275 yards, five touchdowns and one interception. More of a running threat, he also carried 38 times for 242 yards and four TDs.
Pribula redshirted in 2022, played as a true freshman in 2023 and will have at least two years available.
Other quarterbacks on the PSU roster include redshirt freshman Jaxon Smolik, who was injured this season, and walk-on Jack Lambert (no relation to the former Steeler).
