Position: Special teams
(Ninth and last in a series of Penn State position previews.)
Returning starters: There isn't a lot coming back anywhere, other than Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen as kick returners. Singleton returned one kickoff back for a 100-yard touchdown last year. Omari Evans and Daequan Hardy also had limited time as punt returners.
Key losses: Barney Amor did a fine job as last year's punter, pinning opponents inside the 20-yard line 22 times. Jake Pinegar was 12-for-16 as the team's placekicker. Parker Washington did most of the punt return duties. Chris Stoll was the long snapper.
Keep an eye on: There's a couple battles going in camp for the PK job between Sander Sahaydak and Alex Felkins, and the punting job between Riley Thompson and Alex Baccheta. Sahaydak and Bacchetta had a couple opportunities each last year. Thompson, an Australian punter, transferred in from Florida Atlantic. Tyler Duzansky, Will Patton, and Blaise Sokach-Minnick are listed as long snappers.
Statistically speaking: Sahaydak was 1-for-2 on field goals and also handled a handful of kickoff opportunities, while Bacchetta had three punts with the Lions. Thompson was a third-team All-Conference USA punter with a long of 71 yards and 26 punts inside the 20.
Special teams coordinator Stacy Collins: "I think there's a lot of depth and a lot of competition. The specialists came in ready to go and ready to compete from the start. That's been exciting to watch. I love watching the guys we have from a special teams standpoint."
What to expect: The return game should be strong with athletes like Singleton and Allen, but there are question marks everywhere else.
