LOS ANGELES - Penn State men's basketball senior guard Jalen Pickett has been named a 2023 John R. Wooden Award All-American, as announced by the Los Angeles Athletic Club on ESPN2 Thursday evening.
Pickett is the first Penn State player to ever earn Wooden Award All-America honors. He was already chosen as a Consensus All-American (AP, NABC, USBWA and Sporting News) earlier this month. Pickett is Penn State's first All-American in nearly 70 years.
Pickett's list of national accolades also includes landing on the Oscar Robertson Trophy Late Season Watchlist and being named a Top Five Finalist for the Bob Cousy Award. The Rochester, N.Y. native was also a consensus first-team All-Big Ten selection and earned a spot on the Big Ten All-Tournament team for his role in guiding Penn State to its first conference title game in 12 years.
Pickett's season led Penn State to a 23-14 overall record.
He finished the 2022-23 campaign averaging 17.7 points per game, 7.4 rebounds per game and 6.6 assists per game.
Panther honor
PITTSBURGH --- Junior forward Blake Hinson won the 2023 Riley Wallace Award on Thursday, presented annually by ColegeInsider.com to the top transfer in Division I college basketball.
Hinson helped lead Pitt to a 24-12 record overall, including a school-record 14-6 mark in ACC play, and an at large bid to the 2023 NCAA Tournament.
Hinson, a second-team All-ACC selection, became the first Pitt player to average at least 15.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game, while making 50 or more threes in a season.
He led the Panthers in scoring (15.3 ppg.), rebounds (6.0 rpg.), double-figure scoring games (30), 20+ point games (9), double-doubles (5), and three-point field goals (97).
Moren top coach
DALLAS -- Indiana coach Teri Moren is The Associated Press college women's basketball coach of the year. She led Indiana to its first Big Ten regular season championship in 40 years.
The Hoosiers rose to No. 2 in The Associated Press women's basketball poll and earned the school's first No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
Clark gets POY
DALLAS -- Iowa's Caitlin Clark is The Associated Press college women's basketball Player of the Year.
She led Iowa to the Big Ten tournament title and to its first Final Four in 30 years.
She averaged 27.0 points, 8.3 assists and 7.5 rebounds during the season to help Iowa go 26-6. Clark has 984 points, the sixth-most in a season by any player in Division I women's history.
