Penn State recruiting commit: DT D’Von Ellies
Position: Defensive tackle
Recruiting class (size): 2019 (20 players)
Hometown/School: Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh
Stars: 4 (247Sports); 3 (Rivals)
Other top offers: Ohio State, USC, Michigan, Nebraska, Pitt, Syracuse, Tennessee, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Wisconsin
Notable: Rated the No. 7 recruit out of Maryland and No. 22 defensive tackle in the country by 247Sports. He’s from the same high school as PSU freshman DT Will Mustipher and freshman OL Will Knutsson. Ellies has already signed his letter of intent.
Scouting report: The Lions have some depth issues at defensive tackle, made even bigger with Kevin Givens’ decision to declare for the NFL draft a year early. Ellies’ former high school teammate, Mustipher, will get more playing time next season, and Ellies could find himself in the mix for some snaps as a freshman if he puts on some weight and muscle over the summer.
Quotable: He committed to PSU during the Polynesian Bowl in Hawaii on Saturday, donning a Penn State hat and saying, “We are.” He previously had said his decision would come down to, “It’s all about family orientation, the overall feel of the campus, the people in the locker room. Those are the factors by far that are going to help me make my decision.”
