PITTSBURGH — Third-round pick Drew Allar was the only quarterback taking part in the Pittsburgh Steelers’ rookie minicamp over the weekend.
It allowed him to get plenty of work.
“I had to work through some stuff, but it’s all in good spirit, and it’s fun to be out here,” Allar said Saturday. “Great coaching staff. I learned a lot the last two-and-a-half days. It’s been positive. I’ve got to take a step each day. Doesn’t matter where I was at yesterday, I’ve got to find a way to get better each day.”
Mason Rudolph and Will Howard will join Allar today in the quarterback room, and Aaron Rodgers could be coming soon. But Allar used the rookie minicamp to his advantage.
“I was able to ask a ton of questions,” Allar said. “I’ll have a great group of quarterbacks here (today), too, so it’ll be even better to learn from those guys that have been in the system for a handful of weeks more than me. So, I’m really looking forward to it.”
McCarthy seemed to be pleased with Allar’s first practices.
“He’s a physically gifted thrower of the football, but he’s no different than any other young quarterback that I’ve had the opportunity to work with,” McCarthy said. “Everybody teaches footwork a little differently. Everybody has a system of offense and how you tie your quarterback particularly in a pass game. So, there’s a lot of work there. We’re able to just adjust some fundamentals that we think will help him.
“I think a big part of quarterback play is understanding the profile of the individual. They’re all built a little differently. Some guys are higher cut than others. It was great to get them on film. Frankly, the first thing that we did with Drew, and no different than we did with Will (Howard) and Mason (Rudolph), we have a profile tape. So, we were able to do that yesterday, evaluate that and tried some things today that he responded to very favorably. He made a very good first impression.”
McCarthy is a coach known for developing young quarterbacks, so spending time with Allar one-on-one during rookie minicamp will help him as he moves forward.
“I feel like I’ve grown a lot and really just understand his philosophy a lot more the last two days,” Allar said. “I know what I need to work on and how to work it. I’ve just got to be intentional with doing the same routine every day and making sure I’m staying on top of the little things.
“It’s a lot of room for me to grow. A lot of football to learn. A lot of basics and nuances of the game. I’ve learned a lot from a QB fundamental standpoint already and X’s and O’s standpoint. I’m really happy and definitely fortunate to be in a great situation here.”
