Payton’s work won’t be enough to help his Broncos knock off Chiefs

Turning the Denver Broncos into a winner has been a tougher task than Sean Payton could've imagined when he ended his brief retirement and returned to coaching.

Even though Russell Wilson has improved from a woeful first season in Denver, the Broncos (1-4) keep finding ways to lose. The schedule doesn't get any easier.

The Broncos visit the defending Super Bowl champion Chiefs (4-1) tonight and will face them again in Week 8. Peyton Manning was Denver's quarterback the most recent time the Broncos beat Kansas City in 2015.

There's no reason to think that streak of 15 straight losses will end when the Broncos line up against two-time NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs in a prime-time matchup at Arrowhead Stadium. The Chiefs are 10.5-point favorites, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.

Pro Picks, coming off its best week of the season, expects Payton to keep his team competitive but can't see an upset. Chiefs, 30-22

n Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson didn't practice again as he continues to be slowed by an injured right shoulder, leaving his status in question for Sunday's game against the unbeaten San Francisco 49ers. Watson, who sat out Cleveland's game on Oct. 1, is dealing with a bruised rotator cuff. He had been expected to return following the team's bye but has been kept out of practice this week. The Browns repeatedly have said Watson's shoulder is structurally sound. As they wait for him to heal, coach Kevin Stefanski said veteran P.J. Walker has moved into the backup role ahead of rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson.

n The Dolphins are placing rookie running back De'Von Achane on injured reserve after he suffered a knee injury against the New York Giants. Coach Mike McDaniel did not confirm whether Achane's injury will require surgery, nor did he provide many details on the extent of the injury. He said he expects Achane to return this season. The injury happened late in a 31-16 win over the Giants. Miami's running back room will get a boost with the return of Jeff Wilson Jr. The Dolphins designated him to return from injured reserve after he missed the first five weeks with various injuries.

n Despite missing practice on Wednesday with a sore neck, New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones does not believe his injury has any long-term concerns and he hopes to play against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday night. Jones hurt his neck last Sunday when was hit on a blind-side sack by Dolphins edge rusher Andrew Van Ginkel in the fourth quarter and had to leave the game.

n Mac Jones will remain the starter at quarterback when the Patriots (1-4) visit Las Vegas Sunday. Jones is having his worst season since being drafted 15th overall in 2021. He completed just 12 of 22 passes for 110 yards and two interceptions in New England's 34-0 loss to New Orleans last week. His 30.5 passer rating was the second-worst mark of his career.
