NEW YORK -- The New York Yankees' game against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night was postponed because of a forecast of rain and will be made up as part of New York's second doubleheader in a four-day span.
New York announced the postponement about five hours before the scheduled start and said it will play two games today and tonight. The regularly scheduled game starts at 1:05 p.m. and the makeup at 7:05 p.m.
The Yankees are off Thursday, then start a series at Philadelphia. New York split a day-night doubleheader Sunday against the Los Angeles Dodgers after a rainout Saturday night. The Pirates had a game postponed last Friday in Cleveland because of smoke-filled skies from the Canadian wildfires and played a day-night doubleheader the next day. The Pirates also split.
Pittsburgh also is off Thursday before a home series against the Chicago Cubs.
The Yankees are 56-44 and trail first-place Tampa Bay by 1.5 games in the standings. The Pirates are 52-49 and in third place in the National League Central behind Milwaukee and the Cubs, respectively.
In the afternoon opener, Mitch Keller (6-7) will go up against former Pirate Gerrit Cole (3-5). In the night game, righty Bubba Chandler (3-8) will start for the Pirates against the Yankees lefty Max Fried (4-3).
