DENVER -- The Colorado Rockies' Brenton Doyle drilled a two-run homer to cap a five-run bottom of the ninth inning off Pirates reliever Dennis Santana, and the lowly Rockies stunned the Pirates, 17-16, late Friday night.
The Rockies twice overcame nine-run deficits.
A nine-run first inning, highlighted by a grand slam from Oneil Cruz, helped the Pirates grab an early big lead.
The Pirates' Andrew McCutchen also smacked a three-run homer in the first inning and later added a two-run single in the fourth inning.
Despite the big lead, the Rockies kept chipping away at it, scoring one run in the first and three in the third off Pirates starter Andrew Heaney.
Pirates reliever Thomas Harrington allowed six runs while getting just two outs in the fourth and fifth innings, and Yohan Ramirez gave up a two-run homer to Yanquiel Fernandez in the eighth.
