Pirates versus Tigers rained out; Doubleheader to be played on Thursday
DETROIT — The scheduled game between the Detroit Tigers and Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday night was postponed due to the forecast for inclement weather.
Heavy rain hit the Detroit area early Wednesday afternoon, and with heavy storms expected during the evening, the game was called off about two hours before the scheduled first pitch.
The game will be played as a part of a split doubleheader today, with the first game scheduled for 1:10 p.m. and the second at 5:40 p.m.
Two of baseball’s top starting pitchers — Detroit’s Tarik Skubal and Pittsburgh’s Paul Skenes — are scheduled to pitch on Thursday, but will not face each other.
Skubal (7-2, 1.99 ERA) will face Pittsburgh left-hander Andrew Heaney (3-5, 3.33) in the first game. Skenes (4-6, 1.78) will go against a Tigers opener in the nightcap.
Team makes moves
The Pittsburgh Pirates today placed outfielder Bryan Reynolds on the Major League Paternity Leave List.
Outfielder Billy Cook has been recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis.
The 26-year-old Cook ranks second in the International League this month in batting (.458) and OBP (.536) and first in hits (22). Cook’s 22 hits this month are also tied for the third-most in all of Minor League Baseball.
The only two players in MiLB to record more hits this month are Pirates farmhand Konnor Griffin (25) and Northwest Arkansas’ Carter Jansen (23).
Cook was hitting .271 (55-for-203) with 11 doubles, one triple, 20 RBI, 10 stolen bases and 23 runs scored in 61 games with Indianapolis at the time of his promotion.
Cook will wear uniform No. 25.
