PITTSBURGH -- Former Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Bob Veale died recently at the age of 89, the team confirmed Tuesday.
Veale compiled a 116-91 record, 3.06 ERA and 1652 strikeouts in 341 appearances (255 starts) as a member of the Pirates from 1962-72.
"Bob was an integral member of the Pirates who helped our team capture back-to-back division titles as well as the 1971 World Series," Pirates Chairman Bob Nutting said. "He was one of the most dominant left-handed pitchers in all of Major League Baseball during his remarkable big league career that he proudly spent a majority of as a member of the Pirates. He was a great man who will be missed."
Veale recorded a National League-leading 250 strikeouts in 1964 to become the third pitcher in Pirates history to lead the league in strikeouts along with Rube Waddell in 1900 and Preacher Roe in 1945.
Veale is also second all-time in Pirates history in strikeouts (1652), tied for ninth in shutouts (20), tied for 10th in wins (116), and ninth in ERA (3.06) since 1912 when ERA became an official statistic.
Bucs add pitcher
The Pirates added right-handed pitcher Elvis Alvarado to the 40-man roster on Tuesday.
The 25-year-old Alvarado spent a majority of the 2024 season with Triple-A Jacksonville, where he went 3-4 with 11 saves, a 2.79 ERA and 71 strikeouts in 41 relief appearances.

n Justin Verlander and the San Francisco Giants have agreed to a $15 million, one-year contract, according to a person with direct knowledge of the negotiations. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Tuesday because the deal was pending a physical. It's the latest big move by new Giants President of Baseball Operations Buster Posey since he was hired in September to replace Farhan Zaidi.
n Right-hander Drew Rasmussen and the Tampa Bay Rays avoided salary arbitration, agreeing Tuesday to an $8.5 million, two-year contract.
n Joc Pederson gets a $5.5 million signing bonus as part of his $37 million, two-year contract with the Texas Rangers.
n Right-hander Walker Buehler is guaranteed $21.05 million in his one-year contract with the Boston Red Sox and can earn an additional $2.5 million in performance bonuses based on starts.
n Infielder Bobby Dalbec agreed to a minor league contract with the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday and will report to major league spring training.
