The Pittsburgh Pirates signed a combined eight players from its 2024 MLB Draft class over the past two days.
The Pirates have now signed 15 of their players selected. Leading the way in the group is Will Taylor, picked in the fifth round out of Clemson University. His career batting average was .313 with 13 home runs and 69 RBIs for the Tigers. He was drafted out of high school by the Texas Rangers but chose to go to college instead. He also played football at Clemson.
Other selections include catcher Camden Janik, who played collegiately in the Big Ten at Illinois. The 12th-round pick finished his career with 18 home runs and 79 RBIs in 121 games with the Illini. He was a first-team Big-Ten selection this past season, and came out of high school as the No. 14 recruit in Illinois.
Selected in the 13th round, pitcher Matt McShane is out of Saint Joseph's in Pennsylvania. He had 57 strikeouts in 43 innings this past season and two years ago went 6-0 with a 2.40 earned-run average out of the bullpen with 51 strikeouts in 45 innings.
Ian Farrow, a center fielder, was taken in round 14 out of Florida Gulf Coast. Mostly used as a designated hitter, Farrow led his team in slugging percentage (7.50), batting average (.375) and OPS (1.254) this past season. He also hit 21 home runs during the 2021 season. Round 15 pick Ethan Lege, a third baseman, is out of Ole Miss. He led his team this past season in batting average (.323) and slugging percentage (.645).
Another pitcher, Jake Shirk, was taken in the 18th round out of Wright State. He was the No. 1 starter this past season where he allowed only 1.52 walks-per game for every nine innings. He was a Horizon League first-team all-conference selection as well.
James Madison pitcher Joe Vogatsky was taken in the 19th round. He was picked by the Blue Jays out of high school but chose the college route instead.
The Pirates did have a Comp A pick signed, Levi Sterling, a pitcher out of Notre Dame High School in California. He had a 2.62 ERA in 45 innings his senior season. He was rated the No. 6 pitcher in the nation and No. 31 overall by the website Perfect Game coming out of high school.
All eight will report to the Florida Complex League.
