Pirates make roster moves

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Pirates claimed infielder/outfielder Niko Goodrum off waivers from Los Angeles Angels on Monday and optioned him to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Right-handed pitcher Ben Heller was designated for assignment to make room for Goodrum on the 40-man roster.

The 32-year-old Goodrum played in 13 games this season between Tampa Bay and Los Angeles while making four appearances in left field, three apiece at first and third base, and one each at second base and shortstop.

He hit a combined .270 (17-for-63) with two doubles, three home runs and 16 RBI in 17 games this season between Triple-A Durham and Triple-A Salt Lake.

The Pirates will make a corresponding move on the 26-man roster prior to tonight's game at St. Louis.
