FOR MYERS, Fla. - The Pittsburgh Pirates pitchers gave up only one run on Monday but the offense struggled and the team wound up on the short end of a 1-0 loss to Boston in Grapefruit League action.
Southpaw starter Bailey Falter retired the first 10 batters he faces for the Pirates (6-10-1) before allowing a one-out double to Jamie Westbrook in the fourth inning. He finished with four strikeouts and no walks in 3-plus innings of work.
Out of the bullpen, Jose Hernandez pitched a 1-2-3 sixth inning and had only given up one run in five outings.In five innings of work, he has eight strikeouts. Brett Honeywell got four outs in one-plus innings of work and struck out two of them.
The Pirates finished with five hits with Billy McKinney getting one of them. He has reached base in all 11 games he's played. Eric Sogard drove in the lone run for the Red Sox (11-6-1) off losing pitcher Ryder Ryan.
Spring notes: The Pirates optioned pitcher Braxton Ashcraft to their minor league camp on Monday. ... Pittsburgh is slated to host Atlanta today at 1:05 p.m. Chase Anderson is set to start against the Braves' Reynaldo Lopez.

The 33-year-old has been throwing fewer pitches in his spring training starts this year than other rotation members.
