TAMPA, Fla. -- Starting pitcher Quinn Priester gave up one run in four innings of work Friday night to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 6-2 win over the New York Yankees in Grapefruit League action.
The only run he gave up was a Gleyber Torres home run with one out in the fourth inning. He scattered three hits with five strikeouts. He got two outs in the fifth before getting pulled. He threw 38 of his 58 pitches for strikes.
Working in relief, Luis Ortiz allowed one run in four innings of work. He has a 3.00 ERA in 12 innings of work this spring.
Offensively, the Pirates got home runs from Jack Suwinski and Jack Brannigan, whose solo home run led off the third inning. It broke a 1-1 tie, and he later scored Jesus Castillo with a seventh-inning single to help in a four-run seventh inning. Suwinski provided the rest of the offense in the frame with a three-run dinger.
Jason Delay had two doubles and an RBI to help the Pirates improve to 8-12-1. The Yankees, who committed three errors, fell to 8-13-1.
The Pirates play two games on Saturday with one versus the Tigers and the other the Braves.
Outfielder signed
The Pirates are bringing in veteran outfielder Michael A. Taylor on a one-year deal worth $4 million.
A person with knowledge of the agreement confirmed the move to The Associated Press on Friday on condition of anonymity because it is pending a physical.
Taylor, who turns 33 this month, joins a team that is looking for help in right field as the season approaches. He hit .220 with 21 home runs and 53 RBIs last season while playing in Minnesota.
Pittsburgh is Taylor's fourth stop in the majors. He spent his first seven seasons with Washington, helping the Nationals win the 2019 World Series. He played for Kansas City in 2021 and 2022 and appeared in 129 games last season in Minnesota as the Twins ran away with the AL Central title.
Taylor is a .239 career hitter with 95 home runs and 332 RBIs in 10 seasons.
The Pirates are set in left with Bryan Reynolds and in center with Suwinski.
German signed
Domingo German is back in baseball. The former New York Yankees pitcher agreed to a minor league deal with the Pirates that includes an invitation to big league camp right now.
The 31-year-old German entered treatment for alcohol abuse last summer after being placed on the restricted list by the Yankees. The club met with German, his wife, Mara, and members of the MLBPA before offering German a contract.
He threw the 24th perfect game in major league history in New York's 11-0 victory at Oakland on June 28.
