Altoona track and field coach Paula Foreman is in her fifth year as the girls coach but her first overseeing both the boys and girls program in a head coaching role.
Tuesday at Mansion Park was another successful, albeit busy, day for Foreman's teams.
Altoona defeated Harrisburg, 92-50, and Hollidaysburg, 103.5-46.5, in boys competition. On the girls side, Altoona defeated Harrisburg, 133-17, and Hollidaysburg, 110-40.
"From an administrative standpoint, it has been harder," Foreman said. "But the advantage that we have is that (former longtime boys coach) Mike Adams has stayed on. We have good position coaches, so as long as I have everyone doing what they need to do, it runs pretty smoothly. It has been a challenge for me to take over both programs, but I couldn't do it without the support of everyone else here."
One of Tuesday's double winners, Hailey Kravetz (100-, 300-meter hurdles), recently made history by breaking the 45.38 school record in the 300-meter hurdles.
"Hailey broke our school record in the 300 hurdles that was set by Nikki Kerns back in 2012 with a 45.18," Foreman said. "We're excited for her, and we're hoping it's a precursor for what is yet to come for her."
The mark had been in the Altoona junior's sights for quite some time.
"It's definitely exciting, and I have been wanting it for a long time," Kravetz said. "Ever since my freshman year, I have said I am going to get that record by the end of my four years here, and I'm excited to get it so early and excited to see where it takes me."
Kravetz put in some extra work this offseason to put the record within reach.
"I practiced with the boys this whole season during indoor competition, and I definitely got a lot faster because of it," Kravetz said. "I got more endurance training with them, and that's definitely helping me in the longer race."
Altoona's other double winner in girls competition on Tuesday was Triumph Kilmartin, who won the high jump by clearing 5 feet, 2 inches and the triple jump.
"Triumph Kilmartin has been doing really well in the high jump and triple jump for us," Foreman said. "We have seen tremendous improvement with her."
On the boys side, Cam Woomer won both the 1600- and 3200-meter runs, and Xavier Williams claimed the 110 hurdles and the triple jump.
"Cam Woomer, Mary Stoltz and Reese Wilber have been having great seasons in the distance races," Foreman said. "Mary just got the sophomore record for the 800 (and won the event)."
Another welcome sight on Tuesday was Bron Mosely's throw of 49 feet, 6 inches to win the shot put. He was also second in the discus.
"We have some good kids in the jumps, some promising kids in the throws like Bron Mosely who has returned from an injury and is throwing really well in the shot put," Foreman said. "We also have some young sprinters that are up and coming. We have battled a few injuries, but we're young this year without many seniors."
For Hollidaysburg, Isaac Yarnell won both the 100- and 200-meter dash, and Caden DeLattre followed up his strong performance at the Jack Roddick Track and Field Invitational at Shippensburg University last Saturday with a win in the long jump.
"I was seeded pretty high, but there were a lot of good jumpers there, so I was happy with how I performed," DeLattre said. "Right now, I'm just trying to beat my own records again and get better and better. I'm not looking for specific distances, but I just want to get better personally."
DeLattre said competing in Shippensburg, where he medaled at states last year, feels comfortable for him.
"There are a few good triple and long jumpers in the district," DeLattre said. "But I think if I can hit my distances, I can get to states. Hopefully there I can bust a good one at states and do well. I like the atmosphere in Shippensburg and really want to get back there."
Another athlete that had success in Shippensburg last weekend was Altoona pole vaulter Nathan Lutz, who won his event Tuesday but is concentrating on bigger things later this week.
"He gets to jump at Penn Relays this weekend, which has been a dream for him," Foreman said. "We're excited for him to have that experience."
Lutz set the Altoona junior record earlier this season and is hoping to reach the school record. The Penn Relays would be the perfect place to do it.
"I'm thrilled, because last year I didn't get there," Lutz said. "I put the time in, and that's where I am at now. I'm really stoked for it. I just have to keep working on my run and my mindset of climbing to higher heights."
