TYRONE -- The National Rifle Association Foundation recently awarded Camp Anderson in Tyrone a grant totaling $1,378 to fund new shotguns for the range on its property.

"We are very excited about the camp shotgun program and pleased that the NRA is making an investment in our community," said Dale DeLozier, camp shooting director for the range.

Camp Anderson is a private, non-profit, all-volunteer organization that serves as a venue for citizens of central Pennsylvania who enjoy the outdoors. The camp offers public hiking trails, a fishing pond and stream as well as rental facilities.

Part of their program includes providing ranges and equipment for area scouting units, as well as other community programs such as the Wounded Warriors, to teach marksmanship, safety and responsibility with shooting programs.

The NRA was established in 1871. It is America's oldest sportsmen's group with five million members.

"There is no better classroom than in the outdoors," Camp Anderson president Brian Bressler said.

No pheasants this fall

BOLIVAR -- The Pennsylvania Game Commission's Southwest Region recently announced that the Hereford Manor Lake property owned by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission in Beaver County will not be stocked with pheasants this fall.

The property is a 410-acre parcel that contained a lake, which was drained in 2011.

Since then, the lake has revegetated with native grasses and was stocked with pheasants yearly by the Game Commission and became a popular hunting destination.

The Route 288 road construction realignment project has eliminated road access to the area as well as the parking lot where the pheasants were normally released.

This lack of parking and access has led to the decision to suspend pheasant stocking on the property for this fall.

Potential pheasant stocking in future years will depend on the condition of the site once the construction is completed.
