STATE COLLEGE -- As the month of September arrives, a group run series kicks off this weekend in Rothrock State Forest.

Organizers of the Tussey Mountainback 50 Mile Relay and Ultramarathon established the Discovery Training Series, a free group run series designed to enable runners to experience several of the scenic roads of the forest.

The series takes place on eight consecutive Saturday mornings with the first one taking place this morning.

Runners can participate to enhance their own fitness, work toward a specific goal, or use the series as preparation to take part in the Mountainback's main race event, to be held Oct. 31.

The Discovery Training Series runs begin and end at various locations on the 50-mile course in Rothrock State Forest, including popular venues like Colyer Lake and Whipple Dam State Park.

"The Discovery Training Series is an ideal way for runners to experience parts of the Mountainback course in a low-key, group format," said Mike Casper, director of the Tussey Mountainback event.

Each run in the series showcases one or two segments of the 12-leg relay, covering a distance that varies between 4 and 9 miles.

Runners can also use the series to meet other runners and make plans to form a relay team for the October race. Participants are asked to social distance and wear masks when not running.

For the initial run scheduled for Sept. 4, interested runners will meet at the main parking lot of Tussey Mountain, on Bear Meadows Road.

A series schedule with distances, start times, meeting locations and driving directions is available at the race website -- tusseymountainback.com/events/tussey-teasers. All eight runs will begin at 8 a.m.

Information about the relay and ultramarathon event is available at www.tusseymountainback.com.

Proceeds from the Mountainback's 2021 events support CommonFood Centre County, a local effort supporting families with food insecurity. Donations may be made at any of the series runs.
