The Pennsylvania Game Commission announced that public access to Game Lands Road, located within State Game Lands 26 in Cambria and Bedford counties, will be temporarily impacted by a construction project.
During the final weeks of August and into early September, contractors will begin a $142,000 project to improve 1.7 miles of roadway for vehicle access through the game lands. The segment of State Game Lands Road that will be closed begins at Gate 17 off Frankstown Road in Cambria County, Portage Township and proceeds south, ending at Gate 16.
This section of roadway is typically closed to vehicle travel at this time of year. For safety reasons, this section of roadway also will close to pedestrian travel, biking, horseback riding and all other forms of public entrance during construction. The location of this SGL, roads, gates, and other features associated with this project area can be found by using the Pennsylvania Game Commission Mapping Center located at www.pgc.pa.gov/HuntTrap/StateGameLands.
The project will improve road conditions through additional stone and drainage features as well as added parking areas. Construction is expected to be complete by Sept. 30, 2021, at which time the roadway will be open for motorized travel for the 2021-2022 hunting seasons.
