Knicks’ superstar Brunson has wrist surgery

NBA notebook

NEW YORK — Jalen Brunson has undergone left wrist surgery and is expected to be back on the court when the New York Knicks begin defense of their NBA title, a person with knowledge of the details said Tuesday.

The NBA Finals MVP is expected to resume basketball activities later this summer, the person told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because there was no announcement about Brunson’s procedure.

Brunson’s surgery was first reported by SNY.

Brunson, who is left-handed, didn’t let the wrist injury slow him down on the Knicks’ run to their first championship since 1973. He scored 45 points when the Knicks won the title in Game 5 in San Antonio, after finishing with 36 when they made a record-setting comeback from a 29-point deficit in Game 4. The point guard averaged 32.6 points in the finals.

Lowry retiring

Kyle Lowry delivered on his final promise as a player: He long vowed to re-sign with the Toronto Raptors so he could retire as a member of that franchise.

And Tuesday was the perfect day for he and the Raptors to make that happen.

The sides picked July 7 — 7/7 — as the day for Lowry to announce his retirement and for the team to reveal that his No. 7 jersey will be retired. More tributes are planned by the club in the coming months for the point guard from Philadelphia who became a Canadian icon even while winning an Olympic gold medal for the United States.

Lowry — one of 12 players in NBA history to play 20 seasons in the league — ceremonially signed a one-day contract with the Raptors so he could say he ended his career as part of the franchise that he helped lead to the 2019 NBA championship and in the city that he considers home.

The retirement announcement coincided with the news that Lowry and his wife, entrepreneur and philanthropist Ayahna Cornish-Lowry, are now part of the ownership for the WNBA’s Toronto Tempo.

Mitchell staying

CLEVELAND — Donovan Mitchell has agreed to a four-year, $273 million contract extension with the Cleveland Cavaliers, according to a person familiar with the deal.

Tuesday was the first day that the Cavaliers could offer Mitchell the extension.

The seven-time All-Star had two seasons remaining on his contract and could have waited to re-sign until next summer, when he would be eligible for a five-year supermax deal worth $350 million.

The extension includes a $76 million player option for the 2030-31 season and a full trade kicker.

Starting at $3.83/week.
