CJ McCollum lifts Atlanta Hawks over New York Knicks

ATLANTA — CJ McCollum hit a fadeaway jumper with 12.5 seconds left to ruin New York’s night again, leading the Atlanta Hawks to a 109-108 victory and a 2-1 lead over the Knicks in their first-round playoff series on Thursday night.

After starring in a Game 2 stunner at Madison Square Garden, McCollum got the ball with his team trailing by a point. He came through again from 15 feet, finishing with 23 points.

Hawks coach Quin Snyder called it “a great shot,” but stressed the effort of his entire team.

“They work, they share,” Snyder said. “That’s the thing about this group that I’ve enjoyed so much.”

The Hawks led nearly the entire game, building an 18-point lead in the first half. But New York rallied for a 108-105 edge on Jalen Brunson’s three-point play with 1:03 remaining.

Raptors top Cavs

TORONTO — Scottie Barnes set career playoff highs with 33 points and 11 assists, RJ Barrett added a career playoff-high 33 points and the Toronto Raptors beat Cleveland 126-104 on Thursday night, snapping a 12-game playoff losing streak against the Cavaliers.

Collin Murray-Boyles had 22 points.

Bucks want Jenkins

MILWAUKEE — A person familiar with the situation says the Milwaukee Bucks are finalizing a deal with Taylor Jenkins to fill their head-coaching position that became vacant after Doc Rivers’ departure.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity Thursday because no hire has been announced. ESPN first reported that the Bucks were finalizing a deal with Jenkins.

Jenkins coached the Memphis Grizzlies from 2019-25 and posted a 250-214 record that included three straight playoff appearances from 2021-23. The playoff-bound Grizzlies fired him with nine games left in the 2024-25 season. Jenkins takes over a Bucks team that went 32-50 this season.

Wemby to travel

SAN ANTONIO — Victor Wembanyama will travel with the San Antonio Spurs to Portland but his status for Game 3 against the Trail Blazers remains uncertain.

Spurs coach Mitch Johnson stopped short of saying Wembanyama will play. The team was scheduled to travel to Portland on Thursday afternoon.

Game 3 is tonight and Game 4 is on Sunday.

Wembanyama suffered a concussion in the Spurs’ Game 2 loss to Portland on Tuesday night.

White wins award

Derrick White of the Boston Celtics is the NBA’s Sportsmanship Award winner for this season. He was selected by his fellow players across the league.

TJ McConnell of the Indiana Pacers was second, while Harrison Barnes of the San Antonio Spurs was third and Al Horford of the Golden State Warriors was fourth.

Dybantsa to NBA

AJ Dybantsa is entering the NBA draft.

The BYU forward made the announcement Thursday. He is widely expected to be a top candidate to be the No. 1 pick.

Dybantsa led the nation by averaging 25.5 points per game in his lone college season, along with 6.8 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game.

He’s the first player to have a season with all those averages and be named a consensus All-American since Larry Bird did it for Indiana State in 1978-79. Dybantsa says “now the work starts again, all over again.”

Starting at $2.99/week.
