Cornerback Riq Woolen and the Philadelphia Eagles have agreed on a one-year contract worth up to $15 million, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press on Tuesday.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the contract can’t be finalized until the start of the league year on Wednesday.
Woolen leaves the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks after four years. He started 53 games, including seven last season. Woolen made the Pro Bowl and finished third in voting for the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year award in 2022.
Jets legend dies
Matt Snell, the powerful running back who scored the New York Jets’ only touchdown in their Super Bowl win in 1969, has died. He was 84.
The Jets announced that Snell died Tuesday morning on Long Island, New York.
Snell teamed with Emerson Boozer to give Joe Namath and New York a formidable backfield, helping the AFL’s Jets pull off one of sports’ greatest upsets with a 16-7 victory over the NFL’s heavily favored Baltimore Colts in the 1969 Super Bowl.
With the game scoreless in the second quarter, Snell went off left tackle for a 4-yard touchdown run that gave the Jets a 7-0 lead — the first time in three Super Bowls that an AFL team led.
Snell finished with a then-Super Bowl-record 121 yards rushing on 30 carries, although Namath was selected the game’s MVP.
Browns ink C
The Cleveland Browns continued revamping their offensive line on Tuesday, agreeing to terms with center/guard Elgton Jenkins on a two-year contract worth $24 million, a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press.
Jenkins quickly found a new home after being released by Green Bay after seven seasons on Monday. Jenkins was drafted in the second round by the Packers in 2019.
The 30-year-old Jenkins made 67 starts at left guard, before he moved to center last season. He played only nine games because of an ankle injury.
Help for Maye
The AFC champion New England Patriots used Day 2 of free agency to get quarterback Drake Maye some added protection and another wide receiver.
The Patriots bolstered their offensive line by agreeing with guard Alijah Vera-Tucker on a 3-year, $42 million contract. They also picked up wide receiver Romeo Doubs on a four-year, $70 million pact, two people with knowledge of the deals told The Associated Press on Tuesday.
Vera-Tucker was the 14th overall pick in the 2021 draft by the New York Jets. He started 43 games at both guard spots in four seasons and should help improve an offensive line that allowed six sacks in New England’s 29-13 loss to Seattle in the Super Bowl last month.
In securing the 25-year-old Doubs, the Patriots are getting a receiver coming off a season with Green Bay in which he led the team with 55 catches for 724 yards. He also tied for the team lead with six receiving touchdowns.
Getting defensive
Edge rusher Jaelan Phillips and the Carolina Panthers have agreed on a four-year, $120 million contract, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press on Monday.
The team also signed Pro Bowl linebacker Devin Lloyd from the Jaguars that includes $25 million fully guaranteed. Quarterback Kenny Pickett, who was with the Raiders last year, was also signed to back up Bryce Young and Andy Dalton.
