Madison Chock, Evan Bates skate for United States in ice dance
MILAN — Figure skating is back in the spotlight today at the Milan Cortina Olympics, and more Alpine skiing medals are up for grabs, as well.
Here is a guide of what to look out for on Day 3 (all times EST):
Chock and Bates chasing gold
Three-time world champions Madison Chock and Evan Bates begin their long-awaited pursuit of the ice dance gold medal when the Americans take part in the rhythm dance at Milano Ice Skating Arena.
Chock and Bates finished fourth at the 2022 Beijing Games. This is their fourth Winter Olympics and their last shot at individual gold with retirement looming. Their biggest competition will be Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Guillaume Cizeron of France, who teamed up less than a year ago. Cizeron won gold at the Beijing Games with his former partner, Gabriella Papadakis.
The rhythm dance leads into the free dance to decide the medals Wednesday night.
Today’s portion is scheduled to begin at 1:20 p.m.
Men’s combined event in Bormio
The men’s combined consists of one skier racing in a downhill run and another in a slalom run, with their two times added together to determine the final results.
This new combined format is making its Olympic debut. Combined is the oldest skiing event at the Olympics, having featured when the sport made its debut in 1936 Garmisch-Partenkirchen. But the event’s format has changed multiple times over the years.
The downhill run is scheduled to begin at 4:30 a.m.. The slalom is set to start at 8 a.m.
Leerdam eyes speedskating gold
Dutch speedskater Jutta Leerdam won the silver medal in the 1,000 meters at the 2022 Beijing Games and will try to go one better today at Milano Speed Skating Stadium.
Leerdam’s fiance is YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul, which should bring some extra attention to the event. On Instagram alone, Leerdam has 5.1 million followers and Paul has 28.8 million.
Paul was spotted on Saturday with U.S. Vice President JD Vance at a U.S. women’s hockey game.
Today’s event is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m.
US, Canada try to stay perfect
The U.S. and Canada each have one more game — today — before they square off a day later in a highly anticipated preliminary round showdown. That one could well be a preview of the gold medal game. Canada beat the U.S. 3-2 in the Beijing Games final four years ago.
The Americans are favored entering this tournament. They’re the defending world champions and have won six straight against Canada, including a four-game sweep in a Rivalry Series.
Today, the Americans try to make it three wins in a row at the Milan Cortina Games when they face Switzerland at 2:40 p.m. Canada won its first game and next plays the Czech Republic at 3:10 p.m. Today’s other two games involve teams battling for quarterfinal places: Japan vs. Italy; Germany vs. France.
