No extension for Ole Miss QB Trinidad Chambliss

Sports at a glance

The NCAA has denied Mississippi’s request to extend the eligibility of Trinidad Chambliss.

The Rebels star quarterback finished his fifth year of college football in a 31-27 loss to Miami in the College Football Playoff semifinals on Thursday night. He had planned to return to Ole Miss for one more year.

Ole Miss will appeal the decision.

Chambliss took a redshirt his first season at Ferris State in 2021-22 and was held out his second season for medical reasons. He played two more seasons at the Division II school, and then transferred to Ole Miss.

The Rebels filed the waiver request with the NCAA in November.

Elsewhere in football:

– Adding to his growing list of postseason accolades, Pitt Panther linebacker Kyle Louis has accepted an invitation to compete in the Panini Senior Bowl, the nation’s premier college football all-star showcase. The game represents the official first step in the NFL Draft process. The historic event will be played on Jan. 31 in Mobile, Ala.

– The Penn State football program has announced the addition of Christian Smith to its on-field coaching staff for the 2026 season. Smith will serve as the edge rushers coach. He joins the Nittany Lions after a three-year stint at Northwestern coaching the defensive line.

– Bobby Petrino was named North Carolina’s new offensive coordinator for coach Bill Belichick. Petrino joins the Tar Heels after two seasons as offensive coordinator at Arkansas, where he also served as interim head coach of the Razorbacks for their last seven games this season. Petrino replaces Freddie Kitchens, who was let go after North Carolina’s poor offensive performance in Belichick’s debut with the Tar Heels. They went 4-8 while ranking 118th in scoring and 129th in total offense.

PGA releases fall schedule

The PGA Tour has released its FedEx Cup Fall schedule and it has eight tournaments, the same as last season.

That includes two new stops in North Carolina and Texas that previously were announced. And it means losing tournaments in Mississippi and California. The Sanderson Farms Championship in Mississippi dates to 1968. That’s a year before the modern PGA Tour was formed.

The title sponsor did not renew. Also missing is Napa, California, as the two-year sponsorship of Procore was not renewed. The additions are the Biltmore Championship Asheville and the Good Good Championship in Austin, Texas.

Sabalenka flips the outcome

BRISBANE, Australia — Aryna Sabalenka held off Madison Keys in straight sets at the Brisbane International, flipping the outcome of last year’s Australian Open final.

Sabalenka broke Keys’ serve five times on Friday, winning 6-3, 6-3 in just under 90 minutes.

The top-ranked Sabalenka will next face 11th-seeded Karolina Muchova, who ended Elena Rybakina’s 13-match streak. Sabalenka says she’s aiming to manage her emotions and focusing on maintaining rhythm before the Australian Open.

Her win over Keys came a day after she described the season schedule as “insane” and said she plans to skip some tournaments this year to avoid injuries or burnout.

Elswhere in tennis:

– Poland will play the United States in the semifinals of the United Cup after beating Australia 2-1 in Sydney. It took a mixed doubles decider to separate the teams, with Iga Swiatek winning in the women’s singles and Alex de Minaur triumphing for Australia in the men’s. In the doubles, Jan Zielinski and Katarzyna Kawa won 6-4, 6-0 against John-Patrick Smith and Storm Hunter to set up a rematch of last year’s final against the U.S. in Saturday’s semis. No. 2-ranked Swiatek will face No. 4 Coco Gauff. Hubert Hurkacz, ranked 83rd, faces No. 9 Taylor Fritz.

Starting at $2.99/week.
