BG finishes sixth

STATE COLLEGE -- In a year that Bishop Guilfoyle Academy repeated as the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference and District 6 Class 2A champions as well as advanced through the PIAA regional again, the Marauders had one more thing on their checklist for Wednesday's PIAA Class 2A boys golf team championship at the Penn State Blue Course -- improve on last year's eighth-place finish.

Thanks in part to Grant Okonak's team-best 3-over par 75, Bishop Guilfoyle did just that with a sixth-place finish, topping Oley Valley and Towanda.

"The boys played their hearts out today and fought the whole way through the round," Bishop Guilfoyle coach Robby Okonak said. "We are extremely proud to represent Bishop Guilfoyle and District 6 and battle the best teams in the state. The PIAA and the Penn State golf courses put on a great tournament."

The Marauders finished 32 strokes behind champion Devon Prep, which shot an incredible 8-under par as a team led by Logan Turner's 4-under par 68.

Aidan Sheehan carded a 77, Carter Boland shot 79 and Troy Nachtman finished with an 81. All four Bishop Guilfoyle golfers who had their score count are seniors.

"We are proud of our sixth-place finish knowing we left some shots out there today, but that is how it goes in golf," Okonak said. "Our season was fantastic. We repeated all of our championships and accomplished all of our goals. It has been an honor to coach them, and I am very proud of them."

Oakland Catholic topped West Middlesex by nine strokes to win the PIAA 2A girls championship. Westmont Hilltop finished fifth.

In 3A boys, State College lost a heartbreaker on its home course to state champion La Salle. The team finished tied at 8-under par through regulation, and La Salle won the championship on the second playoff hole.

Luke McGraw shot a round of 7-under par 65 for the Little Lions, and Charlie Ladrido carded a 69.

Peters Township won the 3A girls championship by five strokes over Conestoga. State College, which defeated Hollidaysburg by one stroke in the District 6 3A championship, finished eighth.
