GIRLS TENNIS

Lady Tigers defeated

Hollidaysburg bowed out of the PIAA Class 3A Team Tennis Tournament with a 4-1 loss to North Allegheny in the first round on Tuesday at the Gorilla House Gym.

Crosby Denis won at No. 2 singles for the Lady Tigers, the District 6 champs. Winni Hayward and Mia Kaufman did not drop a game in winning singles matches for North Allegheny, the third seed from District 7.

"I am extremely proud of how the girls competed today against an outstanding team,'' Hollidaysburg coach Brian Denis said. "When we found out that North Allegheny got a new No. 1 that is a freshman and their No. 1 from last year was now playing No. 3, we knew it would be a tall task. Crosby played a great match and kept us alive, giving both doubles teams a big boost. Both doubles matches were very competitive, but in the end North Allegheny was just a little bit better team today.

Hollidaysburg finished with a 19-1 record.

"After an uncharacteristic few years of not winning a district team championship, these five seniors were the backbone of four straight championships, and arguably the greatest four-year stretch in program history,'' Brian Denis said. "Four straight undefeated regular seasons, with our only losses coming in the PIAA State Tournament. We are going to miss their talent and leadership tremendously, and I hope they recognize what they have meant to the program.

"We still have girls competing in the PIAA State Singles and Doubles Tournament next weekend, so there is still some tennis left to be played, so we are really excited for that. Team-wise, it was another awesome year and hopefully the younger girls will keep working hard to continue our run of success."

North Allegheny advances to the quarterfinals on Friday in Hershey against Downingtown East.

In Class 2A, District 5 champ Bedford lost to North Catholic, 5-0, and District 6 champ Westmont Hilltop lost to Conrad Weiser, 4-0.

SINGLES: 1, W. Hayward, NA, def. Muriceak, 6-0, 6-0. 2, Denis, H, def. Leeman, 6-2, 6-3. 3, Kaufman, NA, def. Moritz, 6-0, 6-0.

DOUBLES: 1, Bai-Yu, NA, def. Eardley-Stiffler, 6-2, 6-3. 2, R. Hayward-Thirumala, NA, def. Panaro-Klingner, 6-2, 6-3.
