Week 9 roundup: No. 1 Miami survives UNC upset bid, Hoosiers win in OT with QB change, Utah extends nation's longest winning streak

Call it the college football season of chaos.
A year of top-10 teams falling like leaves in October continued with No. 2 Ohio State’s 30-18 loss to Southern California on Saturday.
Playing without injured quarterback Julian Sayin, the Buckeyes struggled to keep up with the once-ranked Trojans to become the fourth team ranked No. 2 or higher in the AP Top 25 to lose in the past four weeks. That’s 11 top-10 teams to lose in the same span and three straight weeks No. 2 has lost -- Ohio State, BYU and Notre Dame.
Freshman sensation Trent Mosley made a 69-yard TD catch on the second play from scrimmage and finished with five receptions for 101 yards for the Trojans (7-2, 4-2 Big Ten), who scored more points than Ohio State's vaunted defense had allowed since 2024. Jayden Maiava passed for 222 yards and a touchdown, King Miller and Waymond Jordan rushed for scores.
The USC defense didn't allow a touchdown in the first 57 minutes by an Ohio State offense led by freshman quarterback Luke Fahey, who passed for 260 yards in his first career start in place of injured Julian Sayin for the Buckeyes (6-2, 4-1 Big Ten).
Jeremiah Smith finally scored on a 1-yard catch with 2:12 remaining, but the Buckeyes' 2-point conversion attempt failed, and USC recovered the onside kick before making its third field goal with 1:46 left.
With a light, steady rain falling throughout Halloween night, USC beat a top-12 team for the first time in Riley's half-decade in charge.
USC students and fans stormed the field after the Trojans beat a top-five opponent at the Coliseum for the first time since 2015.
Bo Jackson rushed for 121 yards and Smith had 10 receptions for 83 yards for the Buckeyes, who couldn’t make it close despite racking up 464 total yards.
Ohio State hadn't lost two games this early in a season since 2011, the year before Urban Meyer arrived in Columbus. The Buckeyes fell to 58-2 against unranked teams under coach Ryan Day, with this defeat joining their infamous home loss to Michigan in 2024.

No. 1 Miami 38, North Carolina 35
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Mark Fletcher Jr. punched in the go-ahead 2-yard touchdown run on fourth down with 7:49 left and Miami followed with a critical takeaway, helping the Hurricanes finally shake free to beat North Carolina and avoid a seismic upset.
Marquise Lightfoot and Justin Scott followed Fletcher’s third score of the night by teaming up for the Hurricanes’ critical stop, with Lightfoot stripping illy Edwards Jr. from behind as he tried to throw, with Scott recovering the fumble with 5:33 left.
That became what turned into the deciding sequence for the Hurricanes (8-0, 6-0 Atlantic Coast Conference). Their high-powered offense followed by stretching the lead, getting a terrific individual effort on Elija Lofton’s leap over a would-be tackler on a catch to move the chains and ultimately set up Darian Mensah’s 9-yard scoring strike to star receiver Malachi Toney to make it 38-28 with 2:33 left.

No. 3 Georgia 27, No. 17 Florida 8
ATLANTA -- Chris Cole returned a fumble recovery 66 yards for a touchdown and Georgia took advantage of four turnovers by Florida to beat the Gators.
Tramell Jones Jr., Florida’s second quarterback, fumbled when sacked by Quintavius Johnson late in the first half. Cole picked up the loose ball and scored on his second long fumble return of the season. Cole also scored on an 85-yard return in Georgia’s 41-13 win over Oklahoma on Sept. 26.
Georgia (7-1, 5-1 SEC) enjoyed a strong recovery from its last-second 27-24 loss to Auburn on Oct. 17. Florida (5-3, 3-3 SEC) was unable to deliver a second-straight win over a top 10 team following its 27-24 upset of No. 7 Texas.
Georgia outrushed Florida 217-48 in gaining its sixth consecutive win in the rivalry.
Aaron Philo struggled in his return as Florida’s starting quarterback after missing the Texas game with a right shoulder injury. Philo was benched after throwing two interceptions, including one on an underhanded heave when pressured that was picked off by Ellis Robinson IV.

Indiana wide receiver Charlie Becker (80) catches a touchdown pass in the end zone during overtime of an NCAA college football game against Minnesota, Saturday, Oct. 31, 2026, in Bloomington, Ind. (AP Photo/Doug McSchooler)
No. 4 Indiana 23, Minnesota 16, OT
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Backup quarterback Grant Wilson threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Charlie Becker on the first play of overtime, and Indiana came up with a stop on Minnesota’s possession to close out a victory.
Indiana (8-1, 5-1 Big Ten) needed overtime for the second straight week to avoid a potentially damaging second loss as it tries to defend the national championship. Last week, the Hoosiers beat won 13-6 at Michigan.
And this one looked was over when the Golden Gophers (5-3, 3-2 Big Ten) took a 16-13 lead with 19 seconds to go on Luke Drzewiecki’s career long 60-yard field goal. But Charlie Becker’s 33-yard catch set up Paddy McAteer for a career-long 60-yarder to tie it as time expired.
Minnesota fell to 0-13 against defending national champs and still has not beaten Top 25 opponents in back-to-back weeks since 1956.
Indiana pulled struggling starting quarterback Josh Hoover at halftime after he took a big shot on his second interception of the season, and two late replay reviews overturned potential game-winning situations -- one erasing a go-ahead TD pass, the other taking away an interception that would have put Indiana deep in Minnesota territory in the final minutes.

Leading 14-13 at halftime, Notre Dame scored on each of its first three possessions of the second half to take control.
Notre Dame’s defense came in allowing only 67.3 yards per game on the ground. Gutierrez surpassed that in the second quarter.

CINCINNATI -- Devon Dampier threw for 260 yards and two touchdowns and No. 6 Utah extended the nation’s longest active winning streak with a 49-25 victory over Cincinnati on Saturday.

The Utes are 8-0 for the first time since 2010 and have won 10 consecutive Big 12 games.
The Bearcats (5-3, 2-3 Big 12) were coming off an upset of previously unbeaten Texas Tech, but no unranked team has beaten top-10 opponents in back-to-back weeks since South Carolina in 2022.

The Sun Devils converted three third downs on the first scoring drive, culminating in Omarion Miller’s 20-yard TD catch. Then they converted two fourth downs on the next drive before Anthony Miller Jr.’s 1-yard scoring catch made it 17-17.

AUSTIN, Texas -- Arch Manning passed for three touchdowns, Maraad Watson returned a fumble 61 yards for a score just before halftime and Texas beat Mississippi State.

Manning connected with Cam Coleman from 14 yards out for Texas’ first touchdown on the fourth play of the night. The game turned into a defensive struggle before Watson’s touchdown just as the Bulldogs were trying to trim a 10-0 deficit before halftime.
Mississippi State transfer quarterback AJ Swann, making his first start of the season in place of injured Kamario Taylor, was sacked and the ball bounced straight to Watson. The 6-foot-3, 333-pound defensive tackle had a clear path to the end zone and a group of blockers to escort him.

Mills-Knight had just 42 yards through the first seven games, but finished with 71 yards on 16 carries.
