COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Bedford horse trainer/breeder Roger Hammer, 80, watched his 3-year-old trotting filly Little Road win a $25,000 Breeders Crown elimination race at Eldorado Scioto Downs last Saturday.
Little Road now advances to the $664,500 final this Saturday. Hammer supplemented the trotter -- which he bred -- to the Breeders Crown at a cost of $72,000.
“Nothing has come out of my pocket with this horse,'' Hammer said. "She made the money. I’m going to give her a shot at this.”
Heading into the Crown elimination, Little Road had made $282,562 this year alone and was 9-for-15 with a mark of 1:52.0. The daughter of Fordham Road kicked off this streak with a qualifying win at Shenandoah Downs on April 25.
The Breeders Crown finals will begin at 6 p.m. Saturday. Hammer's biggest career win came in the 2005 Hambletonian with elite trotter Vivid Photo.
