HOLLIDAYSBURG -- Hollidaysburg's Tyler Steiner, fresh off his District 6 Class 3A sectional championship on Monday, bested the field of 71 golfers to win the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference boys individual championship on Thursday at Scotch Valley Country Club.
Steiner shot a 3-over 75 to edge Bishop Guilfoyle's Callen McClellan by one stroke.
"We are all very proud of Tyler today,'' Hollidaysburg coach Bryan James said. "He faced adversity early on in the round but was able to clean it up before anything got out of hand. Patience is a strength of Tyler's, and it was on full display today as he outlasted tough conditions and a very capable field to bring home our conference championship.''
McClellan's 76 helped lead Bishop Guilfoyle to the team championship for the second straight year. BG finished with 315 points to beat out Richland (324) and Central (333).
"We are proud and honored to be LHAC champs,'' BG coach Robby Okonak said. "There are so many good teams and golfers in our conference. We had a tough road just to be able to represent our section because Hollidaysburg was so good and pushed in our section matches. That definitely prepared us well for our competition today.''
In addition to McClellan, Troy Nachtman finished in a tie for fifth place with a 78, Grant Okonak was tied for 10th with an 80, Aidan Sheehan was tied for 15th with an 81, and Carter Boland was tied for 26th with an 83.
"The boys played well enough to win, which is great, but none bigger than Callen,'' Robby Okonak said. "The kid is only a sophomore, but he is tough as nails and has what it takes to compete on the golf course. He rebounded after some very tough circumstances (Wednesday) in (the District 6 2A) sectionals, missing the cut by one (stroke). It takes a lot of poise and guts to come back the next day and play lights out and place second in our conference.
"Golf is such a hard game, more mentally than physically, and that was big-time for him. It is something he has done all year for us. He came up big in a few section matches to post a score when we needed it most.''
Hollidaysburg's Sam McLanahan tied for fifth with a 78, Central's Cody Clapper was ninth with a 79, and Central's Tristan Ritchey was tied for 10th with an 80.
