Several local baseball tournaments to begin Saturday

By From Mirror reports 3 min read

Three local baseball tournaments are scheduled to begin Saturday in Blair County -- one in Hollidaysburg, one in Claysburg and one in Altoona.

The Hollidaysburg Area Summer Baseball League's Joe Sheetz Field will be the site of the Pennsylvania Little League 12U Section 4 Tournament with Hollidaysburg, the District 11 champ, serving as the host team.

Hollidaysburg, managed by Charlie Burger, will be joined by District 5 champ State College, District 6 champ East Pennsboro and District 7 champ West Suburban. Hollidaysburg and State College will play at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

"Hollidaysburg and State College have a good rivalry,'' District 11 administrator Anthony Snare said. "They play a lot in Section 4, and a lot of times, they finish first or second. But District 6 has also won recently, so it's going to be a competitive tournament.''

Opening ceremonies are set for 10:40 a.m. Saturday. Two games are scheduled for Saturday, two on Sunday, one on Monday and the championship round on Tuesday. A home run derby is also scheduled for Sunday.

The winner of the tournament will advance to the Little League Pa. State Tournament in Pittston from July 27-Aug. 3.

Region 7 Legion

For the second time in three years, Claysburg Legion Post 522 will be hosting the Region 7 Legion Tournament at Claysburg-Kimmel High School.

Bushy Run, out of Westmoreland County, has won the last two Region 7 Tournaments -- 2024 in Claysburg and last year at Forest Hills High School. Bushy Run, which also was the 2025 Pennsylvania Legion state champions last year, will be facing the host team in the first round on Saturday evening at 7:05 p.m.

Claysburg has a 6-7 record on the season.

"This year has not been our best due to limited numbers during some games," Claysburg coach Kyle Glass said. "However with our ups and downs, we believe we have the pitching to compete with anyone at any given time."

Also in the first round on Saturday, Philipsburg, the Cambria County League champion, will play Lower Burrell at 10:15 a.m. The Latrobe Jethawks, which scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to get a walk-off win over Bushy Run in the District 31 championship on Wednesday, will play St. Michael at 1:05 p.m.

The Bedford Hurricanes and Homer City will meet up at 4:05 p.m. before the Claysburg-Bushy Run nightcap at 7:05 p.m.

"We hope to come out Saturday night in front of a big crowd and show them what Claysburg Legion can do," Glass said. "We have the potential. We just need to show it. We plan to just keep grinding away and make it as far as we can."

The winner of the tournament will advance to the Pennsylvania state tournament in Williamsport from July 26-29.

Kia Courtesy LLWS

Twelve teams from five different area youth baseball leagues will converge on the Altoona Independent Youth Baseball League's Centennial Field for the Kia Courtesy Little World Series.

The double-elimination tournament begins Saturday and will culminate with the championship on Saturday, July 25. Over the eight days, 22 or 23 games will be contested.

Among the teams entered is defending champion Greenwood Meadows of the East End Youth League.

Opening ceremonies are scheduled for noon Saturday with the first game set for 2 p.m. A base-running contest, infield competition and home run derby, along with a parent home run derby, will be held on Friday, July 24.
