ROARING SPRING -- Familiar faces donned the winning circle again this past weekend as Anthony DeGol and Todd Homan took home the championship trophy in the 50th annual Iron Masters Classic.
Entering Sunday's final round, only two teams had a realistic chance of finishing on top after DeGol and Homan matched the Huntingdon team of Trey Heffelfinger and Luke Thompson with opening rounds of 9-under par, 63. Saturday's fine play left both teams tied and six shots clear of third place.
"We played extremely well on Saturday, and to be honest, we were surprised to see another 63 when we came to the clubhouse," DeGol said. "But Trey and Luke are such great young players. We knew coming into today that we'd have our hands full."
The eventual winners got off to a strong start when Homan birdied the first and fourth holes and pulled ahead for good on the eighth after scoring yet another birdie. When Heffelfinger and Thompson could only manage a bogey on the same hole, the two-shot swing gave DeGol and Homan a commanding three-shot advantage heading into the back-nine.
"We had two balls in play with good looks at birdie the entire day," Homan said. "It put us in a really great position. That's what it's like playing with Anthony. He's so humble, but he's arguably the best player in our area. He has a ton of talent, and I enjoy every minute of playing with him."
DeGol and Homan continued their strong play through the final nine holes with birdies on the 10th, 12th, 13th and 14th holes. A lone bogey on the 17th hole prevented the winners from matching their opening round, but as they putted out for par on the 18th hole, their two-day total of 63-64 (127) was good enough for a six-shot victory over Heffelfinger and Thompson.
"We feel fortunate that we won the tournament. Todd is a great partner, and he played extremely well both days." DeGol said. "We were especially happy with the way we managed our tee balls this weekend. On this course, you have to keep your drives in play, and I think we did a good job of that."
It was the second win for the team of DeGol and Homan at Iron Masters. In 2022, the duo shot an amazing score of 22-under over 36-holes, a tournament record.
In the first flight, the home team of Tyler Oakes and Zach Oakes finished in first place with scores of 70 and 67, for a 7-under total of 137.
