PITTSTON -- Fueled by two grand slams, the Hollidaysburg 12U team scored 10 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and downed Back Mountain, 15-3, in the Little League Baseball State Tournament at Township Little League Field on Friday.
Hollidaysburg, now 2-1, remained alive in the double-elimination tournament and is scheduled to meet East Side at 11 a.m. Saturday in another elimination game. Hollidaysburg lost to East Side, 2-1, in the opening round on Monday morning.
On Friday, Hollidaysburg opened up a 5-0 lead on Back Mountain but saw its advantage cut to 5-3 in the top of the fourth inning. But Hollidaysburg responded with 10 runs to end the game.
After Hollidaysburg scored two runs on errors to go up 7-3, with one out, Heath Hanlon stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and drilled a grand slam to center field to make it 11-3. Then, after Hollidaysburg loaded the bases again, Aiden Anderson ended the game with a grand slam to left field.
Hanlon ended up driving in five runs, Kolton Wertz had two hits and scored two runs, and Aiden Pavlik added two RBIs and two runs scored.
Starter CJ Burger gave up just one hit and no runs while striking out five in 2• innings to earn the win. Carter Bridenbaugh and Trey Muth finished on the mound, giving up no earned runs.
Hollidaysburg will need to win four more games without a loss to earn the state title and advance to the Mid-Atlantic Regional beginning next Saturday in Bristol, Conn.
