Lezzer Lumber game could be shootout
For anybody who might be inclined to bet, the odds are high that the 2026 Lezzer Lumber Football Classic will be an offensive shootout.
Both teams will feature plenty of talent at the skill positions entering the game, which involves recent high school graduates from Districts 6 and 9 and will be played on Friday night at Mifflin County High School’s brand new Kish Field at Donald M. Chapman III Stadium.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Friday in the game that pits the South All-Stars, featuring several athletes who formerly played football at Blair County and other area high schools, against the North All-Stars, who won last season’s game, 36-28 at Bellefonte to take a 21-19 lead in the all-time history of the game, which began in 1985 with Mid-State Bank as its chief sponsor, until Uni-Mart took over sponsorship of the game in 1995.
Starting in 1998, the Lezzer Lumber Company has been the major sponsor of the game. The Central Pennsylvania Football Coaches Association has maintained the football and organization aspects of the event, and a total of $179,000 in college scholarship money in the form of 343 total scholarships has been awarded to the game’s players since its inception.
The North squad head coach for this year’s game will be Glendale coach Chase Hill, while Hollidaysburg coach Homer DeLattre will direct the South team in the game for the second time in three summers.
The South team — which is made up of players from Altoona, Bellwood-Antis, Central, Claysburg-Kimmel, Hollidaysburg and Tyrone — has been holding its practices this week both at Altoona’s Mansion Park and on the Altoona Area High School’s intramural field. The North team has been practicing at the Philipsburg-Osceola High School football field.
Both teams will feature strong-armed quarterbacks. The North squad will have Trey Wingard of DuBois and Glendale’s Logan Skebeck splitting the snaps. During his senior season in 2025, Wingard — an excellent all-around athlete who is going to play college baseball at the University of Delaware — completed 197 of his 325 passes for otherworldly totals of 3,127 yards and 42 touchdowns.
“We’re pretty stacked on offense,” Hill said. “(Wingard) had himself a heck of a year last year with those passing yards and touchdown totals. He’s a great quarterback who airs it out and who puts the ball where it needs to be.
“I’m excited to have the opportunity to get to work with him in this game and to see what he can do for us.”
Hill is already quite familiar with the skill set of Skebeck, who completed 152 of 278 passes for 1,738 yards and 16 touchdowns as a senior for Glendale last season, while rushing for 371 yards and five TDs.
“He was one of our captains, and was a vocal leader for us,” Hill said of Skebeck, who will continue his football career at Lycoming College. “He’s a smart kid and a good athlete who is going on to play college football, so he is getting some reps this offseason, practicing up, and making some reads.
“He’s an accurate passer who is also very athletic,” Hill added. “He’ll take off and run if he has to, and he also has the ability to take a hit without being fazed.”
Another excellent former Glendale skill position player, Cam Dreibelbis, will play at either wideout or slot back in this game for the North team.
The South squad also boasts its share of big playmakers.
DeLattre’s son, Cole, and Juniata Valley grad Jett Rand will split the quarterback duties. Cole DeLattre is a very potent dual threat both running and passing the ball. As a senior last year, he led Hollidaysburg to its second straight berth in the PIAA Class 5A state quarterfinals by completing 86 of 170 passes for 1,283 yards and 10 touchdowns, while rushing for 1,457 yards on 204 carries and 23 touchdowns.
Last season as a Juniata Valley senior, Rand completed 128 of 255 passes for 1,945 yards and 15 touchdowns, while rushing for an additional 297 yards and four TDs, to lead Valley into the District 6 Class 1A championship game.
“Jett Rand and Cole will both play at the quarterback position, and Cole is also going to play some wideout for us,” Homer DeLattre said. “Jett is a good quarterback who had some good stats in his senior year last year, and we’ll be able to mix Cole in throwing, receiving, and running the ball.”
Eli Woomer was an excellent all-around athlete at Tyrone who played quarterback, slotback, and wideout. Woomer completed 81 of 161 passes for 1,416 yards and nine touchdowns last season while primarily playing quarterback as a senior.
Woomer — who, like Cole DeLattre, will play college football at Saint Francis University — demonstrated his versatility by also rushing for 139 yards and a touchdown last season, and catching 10 passes for 146 yards.
Like the other high school graduates in this game, Woomer is relishing the opportunity to participate in the Lezzer Lumber Classic.
“It’s honestly a blessing to be able to play in this game and to put on my pads alongside some players who were opponents of mine in high school but who will be my teammates in this game,” Woomer said. “Everybody obviously wants to win this game, but I’m just going to go out there with the idea of having a good time and putting on a show.”
The rules of this game mandate that teams throw the ball on at least 30 percent on their offensive plays, and no blitzing by the defenses is permitted. It’s a combination that can lead to some pretty high scoring totals.
“The advantage is to the offensive side,” said Homer DeLattre, who coached the South team that included his oldest son, Caden, to a 21-8 victory in the 2024 Lezzer Lumber Classic at State College’s Memorial Stadium. “A lot of times these games are pretty high scoring because there are certain rules that the defenses have to follow.”
A high-scoring game will be fine with Hill.
“We have a lot of talent, so we’ll spread the ball around and it will be fun working with these guys,” Hill said. “Throwing on at least 30 percent of the offensive plays isn’t really a problem for me. I love to see my teams air it out and take their shots downfield.”
