Claysburg’s Thad Benton among Bedford Hall of Fame inductees

EVERETT — The Bedford County Sports Hall of Fame will induct eight individuals, four teams and an organization at a ceremony Saturday at Everett Area High School’s auditorium.
Among the inductees is Thad Benton, a wrestler from Claysburg-Kimmel who was a state runner-up and went on to win Division II titles at Pitt-Johnstown. He is a member of the Division II Wrestling Hall of Fame and UPJ Athletic Hall of Fame
Team inductions will start at 1 p.m., while the individuals and the Special Organization inductions will start at 3:30 p.m.
Other individuals are Terry Diehl, a longtime Bedford athletic director and referee/umpire as well as District 5 representative; Aaron Sams, a pitcher from Bedford who went on to pitch for James Madison University and was drafted by the Chicago Cubs; Meech Miller, a longtime slow-pitch softball player, who was a member of multiple winning teams and captured individual awards; Wendy Clark, track and field all-star for Everett, who took her talents to Shippensburg University; Les Logsdon, basketball player who transferred from Hyndman to Bedford and became a three-sport all-star. He went to Indiana (Pa.) to be a starter on the basketball team; Jodie (Wise) Kormanski, a Tussey Mountain athlete who excelled at multiple sports, but she was known for her softball pitching. She went on to be all-conference at Juniata College; and Sam Fletcher, a major league pitcher from Bedford who played for the Brooklyn Superbas in 1909 and the Cincinnati Reds in 1912.
Teams are the 1963 Bedford baseball team, the 1970 Tussey Mountain baseball team, the 1985 Bedford girls basketball team and the 2000 Claysburg-Kimmel wrestling team.
The slow-pitch softball teams under the sponsorship of Allisons/Healing Arts/Thomas Chevrolet will be entering for their excellence in championship play as a Special Organization.

Locals honored
GREENWOOD, Ind. — Six Penn State Altoona student-athletes from the men’s golf and men’s volleyball teams garnered academic recognition on Tuesday, when the College Sports Communicators announced the At-Large category of its NCAA Division III Academic All-District team.
Altoona Area High School graduates Daniel Batrus, a junior golfer majoring in business, and Caleb Fries, a sophomore majoring in architectural engineering, were honored along with Bishop Guilfoyle graduate Nicholas Helsley, a sophomore majoring in kinesiology.
Others were Jack Ankeny (golf), Nicky Riscica ( (golf) and Adam Chan (volleyball).
Sylvan Hills golf
HOLLIDAYSBURG — Nick Matteson (38) was the low gross winner and Cliff Lawson (32) was low net in the Sylvan Hills Thursday Evening Golf League
Closest to pin winner hole No. 2 was Pat Croft. Lawson won the only individual hole. League leaders are Croft and Drew Nixon.
Ridge Runners
TYRONE — Liam Roman and Carson Carnahan shot a combined 156 to win the age 14 division in the Ridge Runners event at Sinking Valley on Tuesday.
Andrew Pile and Carter Boland (163) were second.
Keaton Ley and Deagan Reed won the ages 12-13 division with a 189.
PSU player tabbed
UNIVERSITY PARK — Penn State baseball senior Michael Anderson was tabbed an ABCA/Rawlings first-team All-American last week.
