Area wrestlers capture youth titles

Three wrestlers from the Mirror coverage area captured titles in the boys 10 and under age group of the PJW Youth State Championships on Saturday at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg.

Ebensburg resident and Holy Name student Jace Strittmatter (60), Juniata Valley’s Brady Boyd (85) and Tyrone’s Levi VanAllman (95) won state titles.

Strittmatter earned a 7-4 decision over Washington’s Jordan Thomas Jr. Boyd captured a 7-1 decision over Indiana’s Michael Popson. VanAllman beat Milton’s Aedan McCaffery, 9-3, in the finals.

Tyrone’s Vincent Ciampoli (70) and Northern Cambria’s Gabriel Meese (85) placed seventh.

Regionally, Bedford’s Ezra Turkovich (150) placed fifth, while Chestnut Ridge’s Gabriel Albright (150) was sixth.

Boys 12 and under

Claysburg-Kimmel’s Jacobi Burkett (70) claimed third in the boys 12 and under, beating Jackson Strittmatter, 3-0, of Holy Name in Ebensburg.

Cambria Heights’ Brock Lewis (135) finished fifth, while Central’s Colvin Smith (65) was sixth. Glendale’s Scott King (200) placed seventh.

Regionally in the boys 12 and under, Chestnut Ridge’s Kohyn Deputy won the 65-pound title, winning by technical fall, 19-4 in 3:27, over Nazareth’s Casen Taff. Ridge’s Grant Lazor won the 95-pound title with a 10-0 major decision over Frazier’s Tyler Farmer.

Philipsburg-Osceola’s JT Oppel (200) placed third, while P-O’s Lee Clark (70) and Ridge’s Benton Alt (115) were fifth. Ridge’s Toby Bernash (115) placed seventh.

Boys 8 and under

Claysburg-Kimmel’s Jonah Burkett (50) and Liam Weyandt (65) placed third and fourth, respectively, in the boys 8 and under division.

Ebensburg and Holy Name’s Jaden Strittmatter (45) took fifth. Hollidaysburg resident and Bishop Guilfoyle student Jesse Rhodes (50) placed seventh.

Regionally, Chestnut Ridge’s Kyler Williams (45) finished third, while Ridge’s Niko Burkett (55) and Payden Berger (75) placed fourth. Ridge’s Easton Hillegass (60) was seventh.

Girls 12 and under

Northern Bedford’s Harper Boyd (108) placed fifth in the girls 12 and under.

Ebensburg and Bishop McCort’s Journey Strittmatter won the 66-pound title with an 11-0 win over Dallastown’s Lilian Strayer.

Girls 10 and under

Huntingdon’s Hayleigh Morder won the 120-pound title in the girls 10 and under division, beating Midd-West’s Savannah Proffitt, 6-4.

Tussey Mountain’s Sophia Bollman (56) placed fifth. Bedford’s Jericah Snyder (86) finished seventh.

Girls 8 and under

Portage’s Brynlee Myers (51) placed fifth in the girls 8 and under age division.

Barr third at nationals

Altoona’s Deklan Barr finished third at 126 pounds in the sophomore division of the NHSCA High School Nationals on Sunday at the Virginia Beach Sports Center.

Barr, a two-time champion in the event, went 7-1 in the tournament. His only loss was a 3-1 loss to Virginia’s Graydon Martin in the semifinals. Barr finished up with a 3-2 win over Washington’s Arcadius Cruz in the third place bout.
