State to set up Fan Zones for World Cup soccer

Three satellite Fan Zones will be set up around the state for soccer fans unable to make it to Philadelphia to watch the World Cup in person, state officials announced Thursday.
Philadelphia is one of 11 American cities — the others are Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, San Francisco and Seattle — hosting World Cup matches.
Philadelphia is hosting six World Cup matches, including a knockout game on the Fourth of July.
Philadelphia is also planning to hold what organizers are describing as the largest semiquintennial parade in the country on July 3 with parade entries from all 50 states.
City officials have blocked off the period between Juneteenth (June 19) and the Fourth of July for a variety of special events celebrating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence at Independence Hall.
To complement those events, organizers plan to set up fan zones to watch World Cup matches in Reading, Scranton and Pittsburgh.
“We’re here today because we’re getting geared up for the world’s, not the nation’s, but the world’s biggest sporting event. That it is gonna be right here in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. I want to say to all of you here, “We are ready. We are ready to put on a great show, and we are ready to put on a safe show,” Gov. Josh Shapiro said at a press conference in Reading Thursday morning. “We are ready to put on a show that is not just in the city of Philadelphia, but is all across this great Commonwealth.
We’re ready to welcome more than a half a million people to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for this celebration to watch not only what is one of the greatest sporting events on the face of the earth, but to get to know one another, to celebrate with one another, and to have a darnned good time with one another. It’s a big deal.”
The Fan Zones will be open from July 3-19.
