SOUTH PARK TOWNSHIP — The Northern Bedford girls basketball team trailed Aquinas Academy by one point after the first quarter on Saturday.

The second stanza proved to be the unfortunate undoing of the Lady Panthers as they managed just one field goal and four foul shots.

On the flip side, the Lady Crusaders racked up 20 points.

The pressing and trapping defense of Aquinas was too much to handle as NBC saw its season end with a 58-40 loss in PIAA Class 1A first-round action at South Park High School.

“They (Aquinas Academy) did a fantastic job working from behind as far as coming back out of the press — working from behind to get you trapped just about any place that we were,” Northern Bedford coach Jon Ewart said.

“The traps came and created turnovers, and live ball turnovers especially at this stage really kill you.”

Northern, the runner-up in District 5, was forced into eight turnovers in the second frame.

The Crusaders, the third seed from District 7, began the second with 10 unanswered points to double up Northern Bedford 22-11.

“In that first quarter, both teams, it’s the (opening game of) state playoffs, you’re trying to feel each other out and settle in,” Aquinas Academy coach Andrew Kurzawski said. “Then after we settled in, I think we did a really nice job playing our brand of basketball.”

Tess Duer and Elliot Keverline were the thorns in the Panthers’ side as the senior duo combined for 17 of Aquinas’ 20 points.

The 14-point scoring difference in the second quarter had Northern Bedford in the 32-17 hole but with an entire half to try to cut into the deficit.

“Your goal whenever you’re at that point — down 15 at the half — you just want to get it cut down halfway by the fourth quarter,” Ewart said. “That gives you a chance out of things..”

Unfortunately, things continued to spiral in the opposite direction once third quarter action began as Northern was outscored 19-7 and turned the ball over eight more times.

“That (defensive intensity and pressure) is kind of our bread and butter and has been all year,” Kurzawski said. “We really try to pride ourselves on our defensive pressure.”

Keverline, who ended with 15 points, got the Crusaders rolling with a rebound and coast-to-coast layup.

Northern Bedford trailed 38-17 before Ava Verbit, who led her team with 11 points, converted on a driving, spinning layup down the lane at the 4:12 mark.

Duer, who recorded a game-high 19 points, continued her team’s relentless pursuit attacking the rim with five more points to stretch the lead to 43-19.

“Two really good players who both have a lot of college interests,” Kurzawski said of Duer and Keverline.

Verbit made good on a 3-pointer and Amberly Detterline’s semi hook shot gave NB a 5-2 run to make it 45-24.

However, two more miscues by the Lady Panthers and six straight points from Aquinas pushed the score to 51-24 at the end of three quarters.

Annamaria Rossi knocked down a triple for the Lady Crusaders to take Northern’s disadvantage to 30 points (54-24), which kicked the running clock into effect the rest of the way at the 6:48 mark.

With Aquinas Academy backing off the pressure and going into its bench, NBC was finally able to run its offense and scored 16 points in the final quarter.

Northern Bedford ended its season at 14-11 and will lose Halle Baker and Alyssa Yeatts as its seniors.

“Halle has been taking care of the ball for us these last couple of years. She puts in a lot of time. She’s there in the mornings before school doing workouts. She’s really put her heart and soul into leading the team this year,” Ewart said. “Alyssa has been playing all season with a torn ACL that happened in soccer season. She put off surgery and wanted to just rehab so that she could play basketball for one more year. She’s one of the strongest girls that I know as far as that goes.”

Meanwhile, Aquinas Academy improved to 22-3 and will meet Bishop Guilfoyle at 6 p.m. Wednesday in second-round action at IUP.
