Division II basketball field has local flavor

The IUP women’s basketball team is participating in the NCAA Division II quarterfinals (Elite Eight) beginning tonight against Holy Family.
The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tipoff at the UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse at Duquesne University.
Hollidaysburg’s Marin Miller made a go-ahead 3-pointer with six seconds remaining to give IUP a 65-64 victory over Winston-Salem State last Monday night in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional final at the Kovalchick Convention & Athletic Complex.
Miller, a senior, started all 32 games for IUP (29-3) and averaged 9.4 points per game.
Chestnut Ridge graduate Bella Bosch is also a starter for IUP, and she averaged 8.3 points and 5.2 rebounds per game.
Bella Vent, a 2025 Hollidaysburg graduate and an IUP freshman, appeared in 14 games and averaged 2.2 points.
On the men’s side, which is also being held at Duquesne, Nova Southeastern of Florida enters the field as the top seed and will play Black Hills State University at 6 on Wednesday.
Bishop Guilfoyle Academy alum Trevor Rehm is a freshman forward at Nova. He redshirted this season while recovering from an injury.
Nova, the 2023 national champion, has won the South Region Tournament five straight years and is riding a 105-game home winning streak.
Fries among honorees
LATROBE — The Penn State Altoona men’s volleyball team picked up two weekly awards on Monday afternoon, when the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference announced its players of the week.
Sophomore opposite hitter Caleb Fries, an Altoona Area High School graduate, was tabbed as the AMCC’s Offensive Player of the Week, while sophomore libero Adam Chan was named the league’s Defensive Player of the Week. Fries and Chan helped the Penn State Altoona men’s volleyball team to a 1-1 week of conference play.
Fries ranks fourth in the conference in kills per set (2.96) and kills (210) and second in service aces per set (0.42).
For the second week in a row, Penn State Altoona senior Nick Beard of Bedford was chosen as the AMCC Player of the Week in men’s tennis.

n The Pitt women’s volleyball team will face Xavier on day four of AVCA First Serve on Aug. 24 at Milwaukee’s Fiserv Forum, the AVCA announced Monday. Marquette and Xavier were added to a tournament field that already includes Pitt, Arizona State, Kentucky, Louisville, SMU, Texas, Texas A&M and Wisconsin.
