Notable: This is just the seventh meeting between the programs dating back to 1982-83 and just the third since the Lakers joined the NEC last season. Mercyhurst is on pace to stop the lake effect from year one to year two in the NEC. Le Moyne won nine NEC games in its first year (2023-24), but then dropped to four wins last season. Stonehill won 10 games in its inaugural season (2022-23) before winning two games in its second season. Even Merrimack saw a five-game drop after winning the NEC regular season in 2019-20 with 14 wins, and then finished the second season 9-9 in league play. Lady Lions get first conference win

WEST LAFAYETTE Ind. — The Penn State women’s basketball team got their first Big Ten win Wednesday night and it came on the road.

The Lady Lions secured an 85-82 overtime victory over Purdue inside Mackey Arena. The Lady Lions improved to 8-15, 1-11 Big Ten, while the Boilermakers fell to 11-12, 3-9 Big Ten.

In a contest that saw 14 lead changes and 13 tie scores, four double figure scorers lifted Penn State to its first overtime win of the season.

Sophomore guard Kiyomi McMiller lead the offensive charge for Penn State with her 22nd double figure scoring outing of the season, posting 30 points in addition to nine assists and five rebounds. Redshirt junior center Gracie Merkle posted her 20th double figure scoring outing of the campaign after missing two games. She added 19 points on six-of-seven shooting from the floor in addition to seven-of-10 shooting from the charity stripe.

She also recorded a season high 20 rebounds. Redshirt junior guard Moriah Murray compiled 15 points all from beyond the arc. Freshman guard Tia Cleante rounded out the double figure scorers with 10 points.

Penn State had a four-point lead, 83-79, with under a minute to play, before Purdue tied it with 17 seconds to go in the game. The Boilermakers got off a shot at the buzzer but missed, forcing the overtime.

As a team, the Lady Lions, who outscored their opponent 11-8 in the extra period, posted a 52-percent shooting night from the floor. Penn State dominated the glass by a 42-34 margin.

Penn State hosts Michigan State Saturday at 1 p.m.

Penn State Altoona splits with Carlow

The Penn State Altoona women’s basketball team jumped out to a 26-5 first-quarter lead en route to an 80-38 win over Carlow College Wednesday night.

The Lady Lions (14-6, Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference 9-2) got 21 points from Avana Sayloes, 19 from Jaidyn McCracken and 12 more from Lanie Wilt.

The Penn State Altoona women have now won five games in a row. They led by as many as 44 points at one point in the second half.

Carlow (3-17, AMCC 3-9) got 13 points from Audry Clingenpeel.

PSU Altoona hosts La Roche on Saturday.

On the men’s side, Penn State Altoona trailed 40-26 at halftime on the way to a 94-79 loss to Carlow to fall to 10-10 overall and 4-7 in the AMCC.

The Nittany Lions got 19 points from Rasheed Daniels and 18 points from Kaden Claar.

Carlow (3-18, AMCC 3-9) was led by Jordyn Tavarez with 23 points.

The PSU Altoona men also host La Roche on Saturday.
