Red Flash comeback falls short

CHICAGO — A 28-9 run gave the Saint Francis men’s basketball team a chance to tie its game with 10 seconds left before falling 80-75 to Chicago State in Northeast Conference action on Monday.

Zion Russell fueled the Red Flash, tying his career-high 23 points. Gestin Liberis added a career-best 17 points, while Cam Tweedy registered his first career double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Ahmad Harrison chipped in a season-high 18 points.

Trailing 67-47 with 8:29 on the clock, the Red Flash (6-18, NEC 4-7) held the Cougars to go on a 15-6 spurt. Harrison had five points in this portion of the run.

After Chicago State ended its field goal drought with 2:57 left for its only field goal on the final 10:48 of the game, the Frankies scored 11 of the next 12 points to make it a 76-75 margin with 15 seconds left after a Tweedy layup.

The Cougars (5-20, NEC 3-9) made two foul shots with 10 seconds left, but Harrison’s off-balance trey hit off the rim, and the Cougars secured the rebound to seal the victory with one second left.

Suspensions handed out

The Northeast Conference announced Monday that Saint Francis players Skylar Wicks and Chris Moncrief each received a one-game suspension following a review of their postgame conduct from Saturday’s loss at Le Moyne.

A scuffle broke out during Saturday’s postgame handshake. Le Moyne’s Jakai Sanders received a three-game suspension.

Claar, Wilt win honors for PSU Altoona

Penn State Altoona senior guard Kaden Claar was chosen as the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference’s Athlete of the Week in men’s basketball.

In a victory over Pitt Bradford, Claar contributed 17 points, six rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Against Carlow, Claar had 18 points, eight rebounds, one assist, and four steals. In a win over La Roche, Claar had 11 points, including the buzzer-beater that gave the Lions a 62-60 victory. The senior guard also had nine rebounds, one assist, and two steals.

On the week, he averaged 15.3 points per game, 7.7 rebounds per game, 2.7 steals per game, and 1.3 assists per game.

In the AMCC, Claar is first in free throw percentage with 87.8, and second in steals with 51.

On the women’s side, Penn State Altoona freshman guard Lanie Wilt was chosen as the AMCC Athlete of the Week.

In a win against Pitt Bradford, the Altoona graduate scored 19 points to go along with six assists, seven steals, and four rebounds. Then, in a road victory against Carlow, Wilt scored 12 points, while also having two assists and two steals. She followed up with 30 points, two assists, one steal and four rebounds in handing La Roche its first league loss of the season..

On the week, Wilt averaged 20.3 points per game, 3.3 steals per game, 3.3 assists per game, and 3.0 rebounds per game. In the AMCC, Wilt ranks fifth in points per game with 15.6, fifth in three-point percentage with 32.7 and fifth in assists with 69.
