NBA Cup quarterfinals set to tip off
All eight teams left in the running for the NBA Cup are now playing for a shot at going to Las Vegas for the tournament semifinals, along with a chance of picking up more than $500,000 per player as a reward for claiming the title.
And for the Oklahoma City Thunder, there's something more: History is at stake.
The NBA Cup quarterfinal games -- Miami at Orlando, New York at Toronto, Phoenix at Oklahoma City, and San Antonio at the Los Angeles Lakers -- are scheduled for tonight and Wednesday. The winners will head to Vegas for semifinal games this weekend.
If the Thunder beat the Suns, they'll improve to 24-1 this season and tie Golden State for the best 25-game start in NBA history.
There are also cash incentives: Players on the quarterfinalist teams have already assured themselves of $53,093 apiece in a bonus, with two-way players getting half that much. A trip to the semifinal round doubles that to $106,187.
A semifinal win guarantees players $212,373 in bonus money, and players with standard contracts on the Cup-winning roster will get $530,933 apiece. Again, two-way players get half of whatever the bonus amount is.
All seven remaining games -- the quarterfinals, semifinals and title game -- are on Amazon Prime.

– Miami Heat player Terry Rozier pleaded not guilty Monday to charges he helped gamblers placing bets on his performance in NBA games. The 31-year-old point guard formally entered the plea during his arraignment in federal court in Brooklyn on wire fraud and money laundering conspiracy charges, and was released on $3 million bond secured by his home in Florida and another property. Prosecutors say Rozier conspired with friends to help them win bets on his performance in a March 2023 game when he played for the Charlotte Hornets.
– Orlando Magic leading scorer Franz Wagner has a high sprain of his left ankle that will likely keep him out for multiple weeks.
– Toronto Raptors forward RJ Barrett will be sidelined for at least another week following a platelet-rich plasma injection in his sprained right knee, the team announced Monday.
– The NBA issued a $35,000 fine to Orlando Magic guard Desmond Bane for forcefully throwing the ball at an opponent "in an unsportsmanlike manner." The league announced the fine Monday. The sequence happened on a transition play of Sunday's road loss to the New York Knicks. Bane grabbed a loose ball and rifled it at Knicks forward OG Anunoby, who was laying on the ground near the basket support, to trigger an out-of-bounds call.

Flash player earns top rookie
LORETTO -- Paris Papadatos, a member of the Saint Francis men's basketball team, was named the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week for the week of Dec. 1-7.
It is the freshman's first conference honor.
Papadotos was the Red Flash's leading scorer in the last two games after a career-high 19 points against Penn State Shenango on Wednesday and 15 points against Radford on Sunday.
He is shooting 54.5 percent (12-for-22) from the floor, 46.2 percent from behind the arc (6-for-13) and 100 percent from the free throw line. The freshman missed his first five shots in the game on Wednesday and started his collegiate career 1 of 9, so he is shooting even better, hitting at 70.5 percent (12-for-17) from the field and 54.5 percent from 3-point land (6-for-11) in the last three halves that he has played.
Papadatos averaged 12.0 points per game in the week but only played four minutes in his collegiate debut against the Musketeers and notched his first collegiate basket.
PSU Altoona overcomes slow start
The Penn State Altoona women's basketball team shook off a sluggish start to Monday night's game with non-conference opponent Penn State Harrisburg to defeat the visitors, 58-50, in Adler Arena.
Penn State Altoona (6-2) managed just 20 points during a first half in which the Lions shot 25.7 percent from the field, and Penn State Harrisburg (2-8) led by eight at the intermission. But the Lions found more success on offense in the second half, outscoring Harrisburg 38-22 to come back and win their fourth straight game.
Penn State Altoona's Avana Sayles finished with 18 points, nine rebounds and seven steals. Jaidyn McCracken, a Bellwood-Antis High School graduate, contributed 17 points, six rebounds and three assists.
Madison Rusnica added nine points and a game-high five assists, while Lanie Wilt, an Altoona Area High School graduate, returned to the lineup to provide eight points and three assists.
Harrisburg's Mikayla Coleman led all scorers with 22 points, and Lauren Moffatt had 11 points and nine rebounds.
Penn State Altoona won the turnover battle by a strong margin, forcing 23 Harrisburg giveaways while committing 11 themselves.
Penn State Altoona will next host Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Penn State Behrend at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
