The Bishop Guilfoyle Academy girls soccer team will play District 5 runner-up McConnellsburg at Windber Stadium on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the PIAA Class 1A quarterfinals.
BG (20-1), the District 6 champion, defeated Seneca in the first round for the second year in a row. McConnellsburg (20-3) topped WPIAL champion Bentworth, 2-0, in the first round.
The winner will play either WPIAL runner-up Sewickley Academy or WPIAL third-place finisher Springdale in the PIAA semifinals on Tuesday.
The Lady Marauders lost in this round to Springdale last season but topped Freedom Area on penalty kicks to make the PIAA semifinals in this round in 2023.
McConnellsburg, which won District 5 last year, was eliminated in the first round of the PIAA tournament in 2024.
Callahan shines
ERIE -- The Mount Aloysius men's soccer team is heading back to the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference championship match after defeating Penn State Behrend, 1-0, on Wednesday afternoon.
The Mounties avenged a 3-1 regular-season loss to PSU Behrend with a gritty road victory to punch their ticket to the title match.
The only goal was scored by Hollidaysburg graduate Braden Callahan in the sixth minute of the game.
With the win, Mount Aloysius (12-5-3) advances to the title game where it will face La Roche University (9-4-4) on Saturday at the Baierl Athletic Complex in Pittsburgh.
The Redhawks will be seeking their first AMCC title in program history, while the Mounties are aiming to capture their first conference crown since going back-to-back in 2021 and 2022.
Sneath captures honor
Madison Sneath, a Juniata Valley graduate, was a member of the Lebanon Valley College women's cross country team this past season.
Sneath was named the Middle Atlantic Conference Women's Runner of the Week for her efforts at the Last Chance Run Fast Invitational. She placed eighth overall with a 6K time of 27:02.00. She was also the fourth Division III finisher in the 39-runner field, marking her first career top-10 finish.
Scutti recognized
Penn State Altoona women's cross country runner Victoria Scutti picked up the All-Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference recognition by virtue of her performance in the conference championship 6K race on Saturday, Nov. 1, in Erie.
She finished in second place out of 44 runners with a time of 26:10.2.
During the season, Scutti was twice named the AMCC Women's Runner of the Week.
Neely contributes
Ashton Neely, an Altoona graduate, is a member of the Butler County Community College men's basketball team this season.
Neely, in his first game with the Pioneers, scored 13 points in a 116-103 win over Bryant & Stratton College.
Coming up short
ERIE -- The Penn State Altoona women's soccer team lost 4-0 to Penn State Behrend in the semifinals of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate conference playoffs.
The PSU Altoona women finished the season with a record of 6-6-6.
Hole-in-one
Dayonne Beck made a hole-in-one while playing golf at the Sinking Valley Country Club. Beck used a pitching wedge on No. 10. The shot was witnessed by Linda Derman.
Local fighters on card
Two fighters from the Scorchin Boxing Club in Altoona will be in action Saturday night at the Rumble By the River II event in Johnstown.
Lauren Michael, the 2023 Pennsylvania Golden Gloves champion, and Corey Lopez, the Western Pennsylvania Golden Gloves champ, are both on the card.
Michael turned professional in 2023 and is described by trainer Jeremiah Witherspoon as a "fierce fighter who is ready to show her talent in the area."
This is her eighth pro fight.
Lopez is currently 2-0 as a pro and after a layoff "is ready to show his skills," Witherspoon said.
The event, featuring six fights, will be held at the Frank J. Pasquerilla Conference Center. Promoters include Mad Max Promotions, Kastle Boxing & Management and 1st Summit Arena.
The headline bout features Johnstown favorite Tre'Sean "Trigger" Wiggins, who will defend his WBA/NABA Gold welterweight title.
The co-main event will showcase Brandon "The Body" Watkins, who recently achieved a first-round TKO in his professional debut.
