Hall of Famer Wilkens dies at 88

SEATTLE (AP) — Lenny Wilkens, a three-time inductee into the Basketball Hall of Fame who was enshrined as both a player and a coach, died, his family said Sunday. He was 88.

The family said Wilkens was surrounded by loved ones when he died and did not immediately release a cause of death.

Wilkens was one of the finest point guards of his era who later brought his calm and savvy style to the sideline, first as a player-coach and then evolving into one of the game’s great coaches. He led the Seattle SuperSonics to the NBA title in 1979.

He coached 2,487 games in the NBA, which is still a record. He became a Hall of Famer as a player, as a coach and again as part of the 1992 U.S. Olympic team — on which he was an assistant.

Former Flash player dies at 52

LORETTO — Former Saint Francis men’s basketball player Jason Roberts passed away at age 52 last week.

A Jim Baron recruit, Roberts played all four years under Tom McConnell and finished his career with 1,035 career points, 427 rebounds, 248 assists and 196 steals. The steals are the second most in program history, while he was the 34th player in program history to eclipse the 1,000-point mark, which now includes 43.

“I was blessed beyond words to be his coach,” said Tom McConnell in an article published in the Patriot News. “He was a fierce competitor, and he was a skilled guard. He loved to play, practice, and compete. He made everyone around him better.”

He established a single-game program record with eight steals against UNC Greensboro on Jan. 2, 1996. Roberts posted a career-high 34 points in an 85-72 win at Monmouth on Feb. 8, 1996.
