LORETTO -- Catie Cammarata tied the game off a free kick in the first half and then converted a penalty kick after two overtimes did not decide a winner in Bishop Guilfoyle Academy's 1-1 (5-4 penalty kicks) victory over Bedford in the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference girls soccer championship at DeGol Field on Saturday.
Cammarata's penalty kick was the fifth successful kick for the Lady Marauders to four for Bedford. Delaney Lechner, Hailey DeGol, Jenna Geishauser and Emma Marasco also made their kicks.
"We hit all five of ours," BG coach Joe DeLeo said. "(BG keeper) Cece (Rumfola) stopped their first one and had her hands on a couple other ones, but they hit four. Catie Cammarata put our final shot in on the top left, and that was it."
Bedford had just beaten BG in overtime earlier last week to hand the Lady Marauders their first loss.
"We were expecting a similarly close game up there," DeLeo said. "We thought we might have had a slightly better advantage on our small field last Monday. We were disappointed with not finishing that one. We were up in the first and second and they tied it and won in overtime. In this game, they got a PK in the first and fought back immediately. Catie Cammarata had a free kick from 30 yards out and put a beautiful hook on it into the top left corner."
Ella DeLong scored on a penalty kick to give Bedford a 1-0 early lead.
Rumfola finished the game with 17 saves for BG.
"The second half was a true battle back and forth," DeLeo said. "Honestly, I don't think anybody was expecting it to be as warm as it was, so by the end of regulation, I felt both teams were exhausted. In the first overtime, we had some good chances in the first eight minutes. They had some good chances. It was even. In the second overtime, Emma Marasco got hurt and was out for five or six minutes. She's one of our best scorers, so while she was out, we were pretty much playing for penalty kicks. She came back in for the final minutes."

CC snags crown
LORETTO -- Central Cambria avenged one of only two regular season losses with a 25-12, 19-25, 12-25, 23-23, 15-6 victory over Bald Eagle Area in the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference girls volleyball championship game at Saint Francis University on Saturday.
"It meant a lot," Central Cambria coach Leah Montgomery said. "The girls were so excited to play at Saint Francis. They were excited and pumped, and I hope it stays that way going into the (District 6) playoffs. That was a big win for us. You want to win conference championships and playoffs, but to go and actually do it -- that's another step. It was good. The girls were very happy, and it was a lot of fun."
Riley Kauffman finished with a team-high 16 service points, including three aces, and dished out 30 assists. Erica Brouse added a team-high 15 kills.
"I have a court full of hitters," Montgomery said. "Our bench has been doing well too, but our starting six have really clicked together. Erica, who is a senior, has been an awesome leader this year. She's really become vocal and saying what she needs to say on the court and developed into a great leader for us this year."
Rowyn Ruddek contributed 18 digs, and Allie Dziabo finished with five blocks and 12 kills for the Lady Red Devils.

Weaver places
GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Altoona senior Braiden Weaver placed seventh at 126 pounds at the prestigious Super 32 Challenge tournament in North Carolina on Sunday.
Weaver is the first Altoona wrestler ever to place in the tournament.
He topped Montana's Cael Floerchinger by a 5-4 decision in the seventh-place match.
AAHS misses playoff
STATE COLLEGE -- Altoona's junior varsity girls volleyball team split with Mifflin County, 23-25, 25-18, and lost to State College, 25-23, 25-18, Williamsport, 25-12, 25-20, Freeport, 25-18, 25-11, and Hollidaysburg, 25-14, 25-22, in the Jack-O-Lantern Jam on Saturday.
Altoona did not qualify for the playoffs.
Zaraya Henderson had 12 kills, 13 digs, five blocks and three aces for Altoona, Morgon Thompson dished out 23 assists, 17 digs and four aces and Kacie O'Donnor had 57 digs for Altoona.

Bedford boys win
LORETTO -- Bedford defeated Bellefonte on penalty kicks, 4-3, after the teams played to a 2-2 tie through two overtimes in the boys soccer Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference championship on Saturday.
Owen Schrock, Ryan Kovach, Jack Becker and Owen Trimeloni all scored their penalty kick attempts.

Kephart places 1st
LOCK HAVEN -- Mason Kephart, an eighth grader from Hollidaysburg, won the boys race in the fifth annual Lock Haven University Pennsylvana Middle School Cross Country Championships on Saturday.
Kephart finished with a time of 10 minutes, 23.40 seconds over the two-mile course to top the field of 202 runners.
