Hollidaysburg’s Crosby Denis wins third Wheeling Invite golf crown at Sunnehanna Country Club

JOHNSTOWN — Hollidaysburg junior Crosby Denis won the Wheeling Invitational girls golf championship at Sunnehanna Country Club for the third consecutive year by shooting a 74 — even par — and finishing eight strokes better than runner-up Gabby Filia on Sunday.

Denis, along with Lucy Carles, also helped Hollidaysburg win the girls team title. Bishop Carroll Catholic’s Sarah Miller was fourth individually after shooting a 90.

On the boys side, Hollidaysburg’s Tyler Steiner tied Westmont Hilltop’s Jack Wesner for the co-championship. Both golfers shot 2-over par 72.

Central’s Cody Clapper was tied for sixth after carding a 75, and Hollidaysburg’s Sam McLanahan was tied for eighth with a 76. Penn Cambria’s Colton Karlheim and Tyrone’s Blake Sweitzer tied for 11th with a score of 77, and Central Cambria’s Andrew Kasecky (tied for 15th, 78) and Jake Kirsch (18th, 79) both broke 80.

State College won the boys team title by two strokes over Westmont and by seven over third-place Hollidaysburg.

Noce fifth in 3A

WHITE OAK — Altoona’s Ashlyn Noce placed fifth overall in the Class 3A race with a time of 18:23 on Saturday at the Red, White & Blue Cross Country Invitational at White Oak Park.

Noce helped Altoona finish eighth out of 27 teams. Teammate Emma Etters finished 13th in 19:07. Norwin’s Annie Czajkowski won the race in 17:52.

Latrobe’s Charlie Heese won the 3A boys race in 15:37. Altoona’s top boy finisher was Archie Glove with a time of 17:30 in 68th place, and the Lions finished 23rd as a team.

In Class 2A, Central Cambria’s Paige Alexander placed third individually in 19:26.1 and helped the Lady Red Devils finish third out of 21 teams. Shady Side Academy won the team title.

Delaney Snyder was 13th in 19:58.8. Kylee Krumenacker was 20th in 20:23.7, Alyson Sheehan was 22nd in 20:24.7 and Alaina Long finished 31st in 20:58.9.

On the boys side, Central Cambria was fourth out of 26 teams, and Grove City won the championship.

Ethan Haycisak finished eighth in 16:19.1, Reed Takacs was 20th in 16:49.6 and Miles Doyle finished 35th in 17:20.4.

Heights triumphs

CLEARFIELD — Cambria Heights handed Clearfield its first loss in six games this year with a 3-0 shutout of the Lady Bison Saturday in high school girls soccer.

Brooklyn Galinis accounted for all three goals, and Kallie Wiedeman had an assist. Emma Gilbey recorded the shutout in goal and had five saves for the Lady Highlanders.

Altoona falls

Jillian Deivert scored two late second-half goals on direct free kicks to first tie the game and then win it for Shikellamy in a 4-3 triumph over Altoona at Mansion Park on Saturday in high school girls soccer.

Sophia O’Dea had a goal and two assists for the Lady Lions, who also got goals from Ava Frye and Nara Harzbecker.
