The area's best golfers battled it out over the weekend in the 48th annual Greater Altoona championship.
Saturday's first round action, held at Iron Masters Country Club, saw plenty of good scores turned in.
At the end of the first day, Scotch Valley's Sean Brannan and Summit's Quintin Dziabo were tied atop the men's leaderboard at 3-under par, 69. Sinking Valley's Artie Fink Jr was one back at 70, while three others were within two strokes of the lead.
Breezy conditions greeted the field during Sunday's final round at Park Hills, where Brannan continued his fine play, scoring a 1-under, 70, to capture the individual title by one shot over Dziabo.
"I played pretty solid both days," Brannan said. "With the dry and firm conditions, you really had to pick the right angles. For most of the day, I was just trying to hit the center of the fairways and keep the ball below the hole."
Brannan's shot of the day on Sunday was a 4-iron to about 10 feet on the 11th hole that led to an eagle, extending a lead he didn't relinquish.
On the women's side, Scotch Valley's Samantha Formeck won the individual title for the third year in a row with scores of 71 and 74. Her two-day total of 145 was 15 shots clear of teammate Michelle Day, who finished second. Gwen Paden, representing Iron Masters, finished in third-place at 173.
"I hit the ball pretty well this weekend and really had a lot of nice up and downs," Formeck said. "I was happy to win, but I was really excited that we won the team competition. We have a great group of ladies on our Scotch Valley team."
Formeck, a standout college golfer, was inducted into Youngstown State's Hall of Fame in 2021. Her 145-total this year tied a women's Greater Altoona tournament record she set in 2007.
The Scotch Valley women finished a dominant weekend of play on Sunday, capturing the team title by 70 shots over second-place Iron Masters. This year's men's competition was extremely close, with Sinking Valley taking home the trophy after finishing just one shot ahead of the Scotch Valley men.
