The 48th annual Greater Altoona championship is set for this weekend, bringing together many of the best golfers in our area.
First-round play will open at Iron Masters Country Club on Saturday, with Sunday's final round set to be played at Summit Country Club in Cresson.
Four of the top men and women golfers from five Altoona-area clubs will tee it up both days in a format that includes team and individual competition.
In the inaugural Greater Altoona event held in 1978, Park Hills' Rhett Butler captured the individual men's title with scores of 75-75, while on the women's side, Sinking Valley's Janet Stiffler was the eventual champion posting rounds of 85-85.
Artie Fink Jr. holds the individual scoring record for the men with impressive scores of 66 (at Park Hills) and 69 (at Summit) in 2008. Scotch Valley's Samantha Formeck turned in the best performance among the women in 2007 (74 at Scotch Valley and 71 at Sinking Valley).
Last year's event saw the Sinking Valley men capture the team title with a 12-shot victory over Scotch Valley, while the Scotch Valley women returned the favor, finishing 54 shots ahead of Sinking Valley.
In last year's individual competition, both trophies were won by Scotch Valley members. Sean Brannan defeated Sinking Valley's Andrew Ferguson after a 3-hole sudden-death playoff, and Formeck cruised to a 14-shot victory after scores of 76-75.
