Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman has named second-year quarterback CJ Carr his starting quarterback over Kenny Minchey for the season opener against Miami.
The two had been in a quarterback competition during the preseason. The announcement was made Tuesday on the official social media account of the Fighting Irish football program.
Carr made one appearance for the Fighting Irish during last season’s run to the national championship game. He has not thrown a college pass. Minchey has completed all three of his passes in his first two seasons and scored his first college TD on a 7-yard run against Purdue last season.
More watch lists
Penn State senior quarterback Drew Allar was named to the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award watch list on Tuesday.
Now in its 39th year, the Golden Arm Award continues to honor excellence both on and off the field. The award is presented by the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Educational Foundation in partnership with A.O. Smith Corporation.
Across the state, redshirt sophomore Pitt Panther quarterback Eli Holstein was named to the list as well.
Allar and Holstein are each one of 58 quarterbacks across the country to earn a spot on the list.
Settle down pap
AUSTIN, Texas — There’s so much speculation about Texas quarterback Arch Manning’s future, in the media and even within his own family, that it can be hard for even him to keep up.
Manning was asked Tuesday about grandfather Archie Manning’s recent prediction to Texas Monthly that he’ll still be with the Longhorns through the 2026 season. Arch Manning said he doesn’t know where his grandfather got that idea, but he also insisted he’s not making any plans about his pro future right now.
Preseason No. 1 Texas opens up at No. 3 Ohio State next week.
