East all-stars win
Central senior Lukas Black and Hollidaysburg senior Cayden Gibbons played pivotal roles in helping Team East top Team West by a run in the second annual Maverick Baker All-Star Showcase at PNG Field on Saturday.
The high school baseball all-star game for local seniors began with a leadoff single from Black, who later scored.
Blacklick Valley's Greg Schilling put Team West ahead with a two-run single, but in the seventh inning, Team East coach Bill Schenk called a hit-and-run executed by Black to put his team ahead.
Defensively, Gibbons threw out four baserunners.
"The pitching from both sides was lights out," Team West coach P.J. Shell said. "East pitchers did a great job of mixing and locating pitches. … Gibbons was unreal behind the plate also collecting a hit.
"I felt that all our pitchers (West) threw well -- we just made three mistakes in the field, and in a game like this with that type of talent on the other side, you can't do that."
Shultz gets victory
UNIVERSITY PARK -- Trailing 4-1 entering the sixth, and 4-3 in the ninth, the State College Spikes made the most of their opportunities late as a two-run error gave them a 5-4 win over the West Virginia Black Bears on Saturday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
Tyrone Area High School graduate Rodney Shultz (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings to end the night for the Spikes and allowed just one hit as he picked up the win.
