Saint Francis softball no match for NCAA’s top team, Texas A&M

COLLEGE STATION — Texas A&M’s Sydney Lessentine and Sidne Peters combined to throw a no-hitter, while the Aggies scored a program regional record 18 runs as the No. 1 overall seed routed Saint Francis, 18-0, in five innings to open the NCAA postseason Friday evening at Davis Diamond.

Texas A&M (46-9) hung crooked frames in the first, second and fourth innings, while scoring at least one run in each inning. Amari Harper led the offense going 3-for-3 with one home run, six RBI and two runs, while Koko Wooley went 3-for-3 at the dish with a season-high three RBI and scored three runs in her fourth consecutive game.

Aggie starter Sydney Lessentine moved to 5-2 on the season, going 3.0 innings and striking out five batters, while yielding only one walk. Sidne Peters entered the circle in relief making her first appearance since March 21 tossing 2.0 scoreless innings and striking out three of the seven batters she faced.

Lessentine struck out the first two batters of the game before forcing a pop out to end the top half. Texas A&M batted around the lineup and exploded for five runs on four hits, including a leadoff triple from Kennedy Powell, RBI singles from Wooley and Harper. Allie Enright added a 2-RBI single up the middle, before Kelsey Mathis drove in a run on a bases-loaded ground out to give the Aggies a commanding lead, 5-0.

Saint Francis (26-25) led the second off with a walk and hit-by-pitch, before Lessentine struck out a pair with a fly out sandwiched in between to end the frame.

The Maroon & White hung 10 in the bottom half on four runs and one error, including Harper blasting a three-run homer to put the Aggies in run-rule territory, 8-0. Three consecutive walks loaded the bases as Powell was hit-by-pitch, followed by Wooley scoring two on a single for an 11-0 advantage. Mya Perez was walked to load the bases, while Barbara walked in a run and Harper singled to center to score a pair before Barbara scored on a dropped fly ball for a 15-0 lead.

Lessentine sat down the Red Flash in order in the third, while Vrazel led the bottom half reaching on a throwing error and advancing to second before stealing third and scoring on a wild pitch to make it 16-0 after three innings of action.

Peters entered the circle in the top of the fourth and struck out two of the four batters she faced before finishing off Saint Francis in order in the fifth.

The Aggies tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth taking advantage of four walks and one wild pitch.

Texas A&M is set to take on Liberty (48-12) at 1 p.m. Saturday at Davis Diamond. TV designation will be announced at a later time. SFU will play Marist.
