BG, BC, Williamsburg close to home

The PIAA announced on Thursday that the four District 6 teams remaining in the Class 1A girls basketball tournament will play as part of a tripleheader at the Altoona Area High School Fieldhouse on Saturday.

District 6 runner-up Bishop Carroll will play District 6 fourth-place finisher Williamsburg in the first quarterfinal game at noon. The teams did not meet this season, though the Lady Blue Pirates topped BC in the District 6 playoffs in 2023.

Bishop Guilfoyle Academy, the District 6 champion, will take on District 6 third-place finisher Saint Joseph’s from Boalsburg in the second game at 1:30 p.m. The Lady Marauders and Wolfpack also did not meet this year and have not played each other since 2016.

Bishop Guilfoyle and Williamsburg met at the AAHS Fieldhouse in last year’s PIAA semifinals, and there is a good chance that the winners of Saturday’s games will return to the Fieldhouse on Saturday, March 22 to play in the semifinal for the right to play in the state championship game on Friday, March 28 at Hershey’s Giant Center at noon.

The third game of the tripleheader will be a Class 3A boys game pitting District 3 champion Trinity against WPIAL champion South Allegheny. The Gladiators just eliminated Bishop Guilfoyle Academy from the playoffs. The Marauders beat Trinity on a Nick Foor 3-pointer at the buzzer earlier this season.

In other action Saturday, the Hollidaysburg girls will travel to Armstrong High School in Kittanning to play WPIAL runner-up South Fayette in a PIAA Class 5A quarterfinal game at 1:30 p.m. The game is the second one in a doubleheader that begins with the Forest Hills boys taking on WPIAL runner-up Aliquippa in a 3A game.

In games previously announced, the Central Cambria girls will take on WPIAL third-place finisher Our Lady of Sacred Heart in a Class 3A quarterfinal game at 6 p.m. at Norwin High School in Irwin tonight in the first game of a doubleheader that pits District 6 champion Johnstown against WPIAL champion Chartiers Valley in a 5A boys game at 7:30 p.m.

There will also be a doubleheader at Armstrong High School in Kittanning tonight featuring District 6 Class 2A girls with Bishop McCort taking on District 10 champion Kennedy Catholic at 6 p.m. and Penns Manor playing District 9 champion Redbank Valley at 7:30 p.m.

There will be action at the Altoona Area High School Fieldhouse tonight as well with a doubleheader featuring the Trinity girls taking on Shady Side Academy in a 3A game at 5 p.m. where the winner will play either OLSH or Central Cambria, and 1A boys game featuring LaAcademia Charter and WPIAL champion The Neighborhood Academy at 6:30 p.m.

Starting at $2.99/week.
